I slide the backs of my fingers over her cheek, and her eyes flutter open. It takes her a second for her eyes to adjust to the dark and the dim light.

She gets up, sliding herself on the mattress until her back hits the wall. Her knees are almost to her chin in a defensive pose. “What are you doing here?” she asks.

“I have come for you.”

She shakes her head, wiping her eyes. She pulls the sheet like that will stop me from taking her.

“I told you no.”

“I’m afraid you don’t have a choice. I have handled the problem, and it is the least you can do.”

“Took care of what problem?”

I sigh. “Michael.”

“M-Michael? How do you know that name?” she asks nervously.

“Like I said before, I know a lot of things. He touched what is mine, and so I took away what is his. Eye for an eye and all that. You can go to church and confess if it makes you feel better. I suggest mornings are the best time to go.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” she asks with anger in her tone.

I know it is hard for her to talk about it. To admit it. It makes it more real when you do. Everything comes full circle.

“No more scrubbing your sins off that pretty skin.”

She lunges off the bed and fists my shirt sobbing. “Don’t lie to me. Don’t play games. Please.” She sobs on the last part.

“He’s gone. You don’t have to worry about him anymore. You have me, and you have him.”

“I can’t see your face.”

“I promise. I will show you if you promise to hold me. It is all I ask, but I need you to go with me.”

“A-are you going to hurt me?

“No. I’m going to save you.”

CHAPTER44

Jess

Iget dressed while Z watches me seated on the bed. I can't see his eyes behind the black mask and hoodie over his head. I thought of running and calling Reid but feared he would hurt me if I tried.

He said he took care of Michael. I'm not stupid, if he is telling the truth, he killed him. I saw the message in the hallway and knew it was Zero, but I couldn't say anything to anyone.

"Hurry up, my little Sparrow. I don't like to be kept waiting."

I have been taking my time, but I know there is no way out. I don't have much of a choice.

"Will I be back?"

"I'm not going to kill you, but you will not be back to this room, except to get your things. Now, I want you to hold your hand out."

I sigh. "Why?"

"Because I asked nicely and want to give you something."

I hold out my hand, and he wraps his fingers around my wrist and tugs me closer, so I'm between his legs. I hesitate, and then he pulls hard, flipping me so I'm on my back, and he is pinning me to the bed.
