“Fine. You make up a ridiculous rule too,” she countered.

“Fine. My wife sleeps naked every single night we are together.”

“What? NO!”

“No kissing – then no clothing,” he said in a supremely satisfied voice, crossing his arms and staring at her, as if he was gloating. “In fact, I insist on that particular rule. Did I mention that I like to cuddle? I’m particularly fond of spooning.”

A slow smile spread across his face as he looked at her, unfazed and determined. She met his eyes in a silent battle of wills, nearly glaring at him in defiance.

“Fine… to both rules.”

“WHAT?” he yelped, uncrossing his arms and nearly upsetting his cup of coffee on the floor beside him… and Destiny laughed. Obviously, he thought he had the upper-hand in this matter – and he was wrong.

“Write them both down, please,” she chuckled. “No kissing – and no clothing in bed when you are home.”

“I would like to formally lodge a complaint regarding these rules,” he muttered angrily, scribbling down both and putting a star next to one of them. “And you win – they can both be conditional. No kissing unless something changes between us unexpectedly… and no clothing unless you are wanting a divorce.”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Agreeing – and understanding.”

“Oh, I don’t agree in the slightest,” he retorted, “but I’m also not stupid. If you aren’t going to kiss your husband, then he might as well get an eye-full.”

“You know, only a crass person would put it like that…” she mumbled under her breath, looking away from him.

“If we are making a baby, you’ll be naked then too,” he said bluntly, “So there shouldn’t be much difference – except I won’t get to kiss my wife.”

“I just…” she began and then hesitated, shaking her head, swallowing hard. “Nothing. Never mind.”

“Do you still want to go through with this?” Killian asked, his dark eyes watching her and his face unreadable in that moment. “This is your chance to back out and we could walk away from this, if that’s what you want.”

“No,” she whispered hoarsely. “I want this.”

“Consider it done then,” he said in a matter-of-fact voice, ripping off the sheets of paper. “Here’s yours – and please do not share it because it has my social security number and all my information on it.”

“I won’t. I promise,” she said, accepting the paper and looking at him. His dark eyes were watching her and there was a small crease on his brow giving the impression that he was trying to figure her out or looked confused.

“I’ll pick you up in the morning,” he offered.

“I could just meet you at the courthouse, if you would prefer.”

His lips pressed together in frustration… but he nodded, surprising her. He picked up his cup of coffee from where it sat beside the chair, downing it in one hurried gulp, and put it in the sink.

“Then I will see you at nine sharp – at the courthouse.”

CHAPTER4

RICOCHET

This was absolutely insane, and Killian probably needed a mental evaluation for going along with this hare-brained scheme. He was good enough to sleep with – but not good enough to kiss her?

The woman who had nothing, was giving up everything, and clinging to this idea of wanting a child… didn’t want to kiss him? Yet she was willing to sleep with him – in the buff?

None of it made sense – and he couldn’t resist the idea of helping her. Yes, tomorrow was going to be a very busy day, because he was going to be setting her up with some essentials that she was currently doing without… and somehow… keeping this all a secret from the world.

They would think he was insane.
