“Very much so,” he admitted. “It’s not every day that I get married – and I only plan on doing this once. I would prefer we both be happy or try to get along.”

“I’m trying…”

“I know you are – but one thing you will find out about me, is that you can say or do anything… and I won’t get mad. I might be a jerk about things. I might get upset, but never mad – and I would prefer you feel like you could tell me whatever is on your mind.”

“I’m scared,” she whispered.

“Of me?”

“Ofthat…” she hesitated, pointing towards the hallway – and Killian closed his eyes in understanding, hurriedly putting his hands behind his back and digging his fingernails into his palms in sudden understanding.

“It’s your first time?” he said hoarsely, trying to keep from cursing aloud.

“Yes.”

“Thank you for telling me,” he choked out and nodded, in sheer panic now.

Now, this was not just a matter of two consenting adults doing an act between a man and a willing woman, who was now conveniently his wife. This was bigger than that – and he was a fool.

This was never going to be a transaction between them as far as he was concerned – and it presented an even bigger problem.

That stupid ‘no kissing’clause.

“Do you mind telling me why there is no kissing allowed?” he asked, hoping his voice didn’t crack as badly as it sounded in his mind.

“No,” she said quietly. “I need to go to work.”

“It’s early.”

“Maybe I can get off work early…”

He knew in that moment she was running from him, afraid, and he was going to let her go. He would never force himself on an unwilling woman – ever… but he certainly would try to make her happy.

“Let me move my car so you can back yours out of the driveway,” he offered, basically holding open the ‘gate’ so his little ‘bunny’ could flee…

Killian saw her surprised expression before she turned away – and knew that if they were going to go through with this farce, this charade, it would need to be special… and hesitated.

He wasn’t so sure whatthiswas anymore.

CHAPTER5

DESTINY

Destiny satin the parking lot at work for about forty minutes before her shift, unsure what to do with herself and recognizing that she’d run from Killian. He was so sweet, so kind, and she had no idea how she was going to keep from getting emotionally involved with the man.

… And that ring?

She stared at her hand in disbelief at the sparkling stone on her finger. She never expected him to show up with a ring, nor how it would make her feel to have him slide it onto her finger. There was so much emotion in his face at that moment that she knew things were changing for her.

That was why she insisted on no kissing… kinda like the Pretty Woman movie. This needed to be clinical just to keep from getting hurt – and if he cared, if he kissed her, if they truly became friends? Then she was going to end up getting her heart broken, because there would be no magical moment where the guy showed up to win her over. No limo, no umbrella, no undying declarations of love. That was a movie, a fantasy, and she knew only too well how harsh reality could be.

The body was a shell, and she could handle a little bit of nakedness. Drunks groped at her at work all the time. She’d been slapped on the backside more times than she could count… but if you removed that shell? Took away that ‘shield’ around her, dismantling the walls, then it would leave her fragile heart and vulnerable soul.

No one could have access to that – and she needed to keep it that way.

Looking at her shiny new phone, she saw Killian had already programmed his phone number in there and smiled, wondering what else he’d done. Clicking on the envelope, she saw that there was an email set up too.
