“I’m glad.”

“And…” Maestro hesitated, “I’m not renewing my contract. I’m going home to Caleb and Everly.”

“I understand and kind of figured that would be the case. I don’t blame you, my friend. I’ve got a lot to think about too.”

“Anything I can help with?” Maestro offered, surprising him… and Killian hesitated. He wanted to share, but if he knew his sister? Everly would go straight to the house or the bar to hunt down Destiny to say ‘hello’ to see what was going on.

“Not yet – we’ll talk next time I’m down there. I promise. I’ve just got a lot to process and it’s gonna take time.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Actually,” Killian grinned. “I’m actually a little shocked at how fantastic things are right now for me – and I keep waiting for something to happen.”

“Oh, I get that…” Maestro laughed nervously.

“It’s worse since your wingman left,” Killian admitted. “Reilly’s been on the warpath, and I don’t know what his deal is - but I’ve had to run nearly every day this week…”

“Great. Just great. He wants to see me about assigning me a new wingman and I was going to give my notice.”

“Good luck.”

“Thanks. I think I’m going to need it.”

Two days later,Killian had just finished emailing Destiny when he heard screaming down the hallway.

“SECURITY!” Maestro hollered, and Ricochet shot to his feet, running outside of the room and nearly colliding with Riptide, Copperhead, and Sparky as they flew out of the other rooms.

All of the men started down the hallway, Ricochet shoving through them – only to see two security guards go racing into Reilly’s office… and heard more screaming as the door opened.

“I HATE YOUR SMUG ATTITUDE AND HOW YOU THINK YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE! YOU ARE NOBODY! DO YOU HEAR ME? I WILL HAVE YOUR WINGS FOR THIS STUNT AND YOU WILL NEVER…”

“Sir, Lieutenant Colonel Reilly, you need to remove your hands from First Lieutenant Merrick – now, sir,” one of the security detail began as the door started to close behind him…

Ricochet threw out both of his arms to stop the men behind him, nearly clotheslining Sparky who fell backwards, clutching his throat, gagging.

“Are you okay?”

“What in the world is going on?” Riptide hissed. “Oh man, Colonel Bradford, too? Ohhhh boy, someone’s gonna hang!”

“Maestro’s in there,” Ricochet said grimly.

“Oh no… no, no, no.”

“Sup, fellas,” Paradox said from behind them, causing the four of them to turn around as Copperhead and Sparky burst out laughing. Paradox was standing there holding a bag of popcorn – and threw a popped kernel in his mouth, chewing and grinning broadly. “Has the show begun?”

“How did you know?”

Paradox shrugged evasively.

Ricochet looked back to the silent hallway and could hear voices behind the closed door – that suddenly opened.

“Shhhh!” he hissed.

“… Escort Lieutenant Colonel Reilly to his quarters, and I need a report from each of you on what has just transpired.”

All of them stepped to the side, immediately saluting – and not making eye-contact as the security team walked Colonel Reilly down the hallway. His raging expression made Ricochet swallow because he was pretty sure he didn’t have enough rubber on his sneakers to cover all the terrain he would have to run if he made this irate man mad at this point. He wasn’t sure what happened… and then he heard it.
