“I’ve got it on good authority that you two became close.”

He shot his eyes down to the floor, ashamed.

“Hey, it’s all right, Rus. I don’t think she poisoned me because she was a traitor. I think she did it to enact a plan on Zane. If that’s the case, I need her to have backup.”

His eyes shot up to mine. “You trust me with this, boss? Without my brothers?”

“Rusty, you’ve got this. I trust you and if I’m right, she trusts you too.”

His eyes brightened just a tad as I put my hand on his shoulder and we headed out of the mansion and toward the tunnel. Cy stood up from his stool and looked alert.

“Boss?”

“It’s all good, Cy. I’m sending Rusty up to the city to talk to Paisley.”

“By himself?” Cy asked. He was the most confident of the brothers, and normally the one I trusted with everything.

“Yes, by himself,” I replied. “He’s perfectly capable and he has the relationship with Paisley that will see him get through her defenses.”

It annoyed me that no one had faith in Rusty. He was one of my favorite people and he was treated like a halfwit. That needed to change.

Once I got my queen back.

Cy opened the gates and then the door. I flicked the switch which would light up the tunnel and told Rusty to keep going until he hit the door at the other end. He’d come up in the club where Ren would be. He just needed to get onto the street outside the club and then head to the hotel.

“Got it, boss. I won’t let you down.”

I could see he was scared but he entered the tunnel and made his way toward the city.

“Maybe Ben should go with him,” Cy said.

“You need to have more faith in him, Cy. He’s got this.”

Cy didn’t believe me but he didn’t argue the point. He sat back down on his stool and closed the gate.

I had a dinner with my brother to attend and by now, he knew I’d lost my only bargaining chip in getting him to leave my territory alone.

Chapter Nine

Halen

Zanewasalreadysittingat the table when I walked in. Raina was fussing over the arrangements in the middle of the table as usual but the seat at the end, where our father usually sat and had been empty for years now, was set up. Confusion washed over me as I imagined perhaps Percy was back until the son of a bitch walked in and sat down.

“Ah, Halen, I was hoping you’d be here tonight.”Zane looked up from his phone, shock and dismay on his face. “I see she didn’t do such a good job.”

The fucker knew.

And somehow he knew she’d poisoned me. Had I been wrong about Paisley? Had she done that to me to make Zane happy?

No…if it had been for Zane, I’d be dead.

“She did a fine job,” I replied, taking my seat. “I just have better people who know how to counteract the poisons I have.”

He wasn’t convinced but I didn’t expect him to be. It would put a little doubt in him though and that’s all I wanted.

My stomach was still aching from the ipecac and the poison but I would eat, act normal, and see if I could get under Zane’s skin enough for him to reveal something I needed.

“Son,” Charles announced as he looked at the door. I turned to see Percy standing there, surprise written all over his normally expressionless face. “Come in, eat.”
