“Tell me where he is, where she is and where my brother is.”

“I…do…do…don’t….know,” she tried to force out in gasps. “I sw…swear.”

“I don’t believe you.”

She looked to Ren who was approaching us from behind and then back at me. Ren was rifling through the papers on her desk.

“If he finds something, I will snap your neck.”

“You’re going…going…to do it….anyway.”

“Maybe, maybe not. It really does depend on the information I get.”

“You aren’t…like him. You have a….heart. I told her…that.”

I released my hold a bit, realizing she was talking about Paisley. She told her I wasn’t a monster? Why would she do that? It only made me angrier that she was playing games with me now.

“One you have torn out by destroying your daughter the way you did. Now tell me what I need to know or I will make this a very painful death.”

I shoved her back, and she fell into a chair with a thud. She put her hands up to her neck and massaged it.

“You really love her?” she asked me.

I pulled a chair over and sat down in front of her. Leaning forward, I thought of a tactic that would work but it seems she needed a little schooling on what love was.

“You think she can’t be loved?”

“After what she’s been through? The things done to her…she’s a broken woman.”

The urge to slap was radiating in my palm but I held it down and thought of another way I could get across to her.

“There is no such thing as a broken woman,” I told her, now leaning back in my chair and crossing a leg over my knee. “Just a woman who doesn’t know herself, or how to look after herself.”

“She was raped…by him.”

I looked up at Ren who frowned. Obviously that was news to him as well.

“I thought Jack did that.”

She smirked at me. “No, that’s just what we told her over and over again. After her ordeal, she was a little bent in the head. It didn’t take much prodding for her to turn against her father and believe whatever we wanted her to believe.”

“Let me get this straight, you handed your fourteen year old daughter over to Zane knowing what he wanted with her, and when she was returned, you paraded her in front of him like a prize for him to claim just so you could have his favor?”

She backed up in her chair, her lip was quivering again because she knew I was about to lose my cool.

“You sent her back to her rapist,” I spat, getting up and towering over her. “You’re a sick woman, Daniela.”

I felt sick to my stomach. My brother had caused so much damage to this city, as my father had years before him. I never thought my brother could be this deranged, though.

I slapped her across the face so hard that my own hand tingled with the after effect. Her head had snapped to the side and she started to cry as her head came back to look at me. I couldn’t help it. I slapped her again, this time on the other side of the face. Blood began to trickle out of her nose and the corner of her mouth as she let out a wail of self pity. Her hands went to her face as she looked at me through her mouse brown hair strands.

“Tell me where they are or I will keep doing this until you beg me to stop, then I’ll amp it up until you’re unable to breath through the broken bones and punctured organs.”

Ren moved behind her, and held her arms back so she couldn’t move while I rolled up the sleeves of my shirt.

“I don’t know where he is. He lost faith in me. I am trying to get some goodwill now by working on his project. I don’t know where he is. He said something about his brother, though.”

“Me?”
