“Good,” Percy said. “Don’t worry, Paisley, we’ll get home. It just might take a bit, depending on how far we are.”

I nodded, knowing he was right, and yet hoping we hadn’t ventured too far.

A week later

Somewhere in Spain

Percy was taking his time with his contact. He’d told me to wait away from the business district and to hang out in a cafe. There was only so much coffee I could fucking drink. I wanted to be home. It had been a long week since we escaped from the pirates, and we were now in the second country since arriving on the shores of Morocco after a long couple of nights with the tiny dinghy. Percy had been happy to be here since he knew a couple that could help us get to the United States but he’d been with them for hours now. It was starting to look suspicious that I was sitting here alone. I paid for my drinks with the money Percy had lifted off a tourist when we arrived. Grabbing my sunglasses and my hat, I headed for the park to sit. My burner phone felt as if it were burning a hole in my pocket, waiting for him to contact me and tell me it was all good.

He’d tried to get word to Halen that we were still alive but every number we tried went dead immediately. He’d told me not to worry, that Halen was constantly breaking his phones, but even I knew he was worried.

I looked down at the wifi signal, and noticed it was strong here in the park. I logged in and checked the news. It was mostly local news so I didn’t expect to understand any of it. I opened up Google and searched for Halen’s name.

That’s when I saw it.

The news articles that told the story of Olympia’s downfall. A large black and white photo of Olympia in tatters after multiple explosives were planted around the city and went off simultaneously.

There was nothing left, and half the city had fallen into a sinkhole, just like fifteen years earlier when a small portion of the city had fallen into a sinkhole.

What the fuck?

No one had heard from Halen after the destruction, but Zane was seemingly operating out of the desert for now.

Had he done it? Had Zane killed Halen?

My heart began to race, was I returning to a life without him?

It was then that I saw a familiar face coming toward me. Percy looked happy and slightly drunk as he sat down on the park bench next to me.

I handed him the phone with the news article. He quickly read it.

“Don’t worry, my friends told me Halen’s alive. He’s just waiting for them to classify the city safe to return to.”

“It’s a fucking sinkhole.”

“So was his home. He made that into a place for everyone and it was totally safe. I assume this will happen again.”

I wasn’t so sure but I was glad that he was safe.

“Does he know we are alive?”

“I doubt it, my contacts will only do so much for me. Look, we got new passports and a ride to Cuba. From there, we can find a boat to head into Florida and head up the coast to another contact who will fly us to a city close to Olympia.”

“It’s destroyed, do you really think he will still be there?” I asked him.

“Yes, he loved Olympia. There’s no way he would abandon it.”

I loved how fierce his loyalty was. I just loved everything about Halen. He was everything you could want in a man.

“Are you ready to get home?” Percy asked me.

“I can’t wait to get home. I’m done with travel for a good while, too.”

Percy tried to stifle a chuckle but he let out a raucous one, a genuine laugh that definitely made him seem more human than what I’d seen since I met him. When he smiled, his eyes crinkled at the corner, and he seemed lighthearted.

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”
