“Hey, it’s the slender guys that are athletic,” Brian warned.

“She’s a black belt and takes self-defense classes like a hobby,” Jessica confessed. “If anything, I might be worried for Clay. If he says the wrong thing, her instinct might take over.”

“I was eating next door. Let me get you and Beth some dinner?” Brian offered.

“Thank you. You know, I wasn't kidding when I told you Beth has a big appetite. I know she looks all slim, but she can really put some food away.”

Brian wasn't ready for a joking Jessica. When she was smiling, she became softer and more approachable. Or maybe he was just the one who was loosening up, finally. When he was around Jessica, everything just went topsy turvy.

They went into the restaurant, and she placed the order for her and Beth, and then they took a seat by a window. Brian wound up sitting at the same table he was sitting with Mr. Prince and Clay.

Everyone was trying to slyly look at them. He wanted to tell them to turn around and get back to their business, but he realized they were probably the hottest topic in the town of Peace right now.

“So, while we're waiting, do you want to talk?”

Brian was hoping that she would say something. At this point he’d take anything so he wouldn’t be focusing on all of the people looking at them.

“Sure. Go ahead.”

“So, I know that you're the head of accounting, but I guess I'm a little curious.”

“Curious? About what?”

“Tell me something about Brian Cholan. Whatever you want.”

“Is this one of those women tests that I read all about in the magazines?”

“One, it is not a woman's test, but I am way more interested now in what you're reading in the women's magazine.”

Brian shifted in his seat hoping the food would come.

“I read the surveys that women take about what men like and what their words mean. I think they are funny.”

“Funny?”

“Yes, it just seems so odd to me that there are a panel of women giving advice on what a man wants, thinks and does and no man is in sight.”

Jessica smiled. “Maybe the men won’t talk.”

“Well, I have to tell you it’s way more entertaining listening to women tell other women what men want.”

“Like what?” Jessica prodded.

“Like makeup. I couldn’t tell you one color from another. If it all matches or even if it’s in the same color family.”

Jessica snorted. “Puh-lease. Men notice makeup.”

“Did you know that one out of twelve men have a problem with identifying colors? We won’t focus on something we can’t all talk about. Now a woman’s hair... They would remember hair like yours. Yours is like spun gold. It’s incredibly attractive.”

Chapter Six

Did he just say my hair was like spun gold? Jessica asked herself.

“I guess it has to be so when people catch me reading the labels, they can get distracted by my hair.” Jessica nodded her head.

“Wow, that one again? Are you going to taunt me forever for pointing out the obvious?” he asked.

“I'm okay with direction. It was just that tone that sent it overboard,” Jessica told him. She expected him to have a quick reply. Instead, he held up his hands in surrender and said she was right.
