That was the second time she had heard about Pilar.

“I haven’t had the time, but I think I’ll try to get to her tomorrow.”

Lars nodded. He seemed like he was about to say something but then he stopped.

“I’ll be seeing you around,”

Jessica placed her hand on Lars’ arm. “You know, I like to read. I am reading the latest mystery by A.C. Pyre.”

Lars’ eyes lit up. “I’m reading that, too. Please come by some time.”

“How about tomorrow?” Jessica said unsure of what Lars would say.

“That would be nice of you, and I’d appreciate it.”

Jessica smiled and a sense of relief passed over her.

“I can’t wait,” she said as she placed a kiss on his cheek.

Chapter Nine

By the time the second day passed that she hadn’t talked to Brian, Jessica had to admit she missed him. Well, not in that kind of way, but she just wanted to know if he was alright or perhaps he needed some help with the numbers. After sitting in the Shell cleaning up as much as she could, she took a walk.

Beth was staying indoors as she took her stroll. The first place she went to was Lars’ place. He was sitting on his lawn reading the latest A.C Pyre book. They talked about the book and the pros and cons of the plot. She found out that he liked the same authors she did. She told him Brian should be back tomorrow, but if she could she would get away. Before she left, Lars reminded her not to forget about Pilar.

True to his word Lars could see the sea from his lawn. Was Brian out there on the boat she saw in the distance or another? Maybe the boat was docked, and he was even now coming back to his hotel. Why was she so preoccupied with what this man was doing? What's that famous expression, that time and distance made people fond of one another? It seemed like the longer he was gone, the more she thought about him, and this had only been day two.

When she woke up this morning, she was warmer than she had been before. With the screen fixed, she was able to close the window. Now her nightgowns were just a little too warm in the evenings. When she got out of the bed, her feet hit the carpet and they were nice and toasty, too. How long had he thought about that before he sent Lars to help? The bigger question was, was he thinking about her like she was thinking about him?

“How totally pathetic,” she said out loud. If Beth could hear her thoughts she would take her back to New York ASAP. “You lived before you met Brian and it’s possible to do so again,” she chided herself. Okay, what could she do that would take her mind off of Brian? Ah, she could go and see the mysterious Pilar. If memory served her correctly it was on the way to the Shell. It didn’t take her long to find the address. When she got to the house it was right out of a fairy tale. It was in a row of four houses, but they weren’t connected. Her house was light pink with blue trim. The path to the door was lined with flowers that stood tall in different colors. Jessica went to the door and knocked. The door cracked open under the slight pressure she had applied to it. Jessica thought it was odd, but this was Peace. It was also so odd how everyone said Pilar had been here for a while, but Jessica had never met her.

Jessica tapped on the door one more time and finally there was an answer. A woman who was in her late 70s came to the door. At first Jessica thought she had met the woman before because she seemed familiar, but she couldn’t place it.

“Oh hello! I thought you were Sandy coming over for some tea and a little game of cards.”

“Sandy?” Jessica repeated as she tried to figure out where she had met the woman.

“You are not Sandy, but I know who you are. It’s good to finally meet you face to face, Jessica.”

“Have we met before?” Jessica asked. She would be incredibly surprised to find out that she had been wrong, but the sense of the familiarity was still nagging Jessica.

“No, we haven’t but I feel like I know everything about you. Peter told me everything about you. You were the topic of more of our conversations than anything else.”

Jessica was extremely lost now. Mr. Middleton had told her about her. Jessica couldn’t imagine why she would be the topic of any person. “I’m sorry, you have me at a disadvantage. Your name?”

The woman straightened up and gave Jessica a big smile.

“I’m Pilar Masters.”

Jessica nodded and smiled. “Hello, Ms. Masters.”

The woman shook her head. “Let me try again. I’m Pilar Corsca.”

Jessica looked at the woman and froze. She’d never met the woman, but she definitely knew who the VP of accounting was for Butler Hotels. She had passed on the putting together the financials. She was a woman rarely seen in the office. This was Pilar Corsca.

“Hello, Mrs. Corsca. I’m sorry I didn’t recog—”
