“I remember when I stood there. I never thought I would fit. It seems daunting,” Axanar said.

I nodded. “I don’t mean to presume anything. I know that many things can change. I may never get to sit in that chair.”

“I don’t think you have to worry about that. Like Divad said, you’re well suited to it. To be honest I wondered if at any point you were going to challenge Divad for the role. I worried that there might have been a fight.”

“I would never have betrayed him like that.”

“No, I suppose you wouldn’t. I am in your debt, by the way, for saving his life. He’s really changed. I tried to get him to see what was important, but I suppose he had to see it for himself, and the only way was by nearly dying,” Axanar sighed. “I can’t believe that we all allowed this to happen. I think we have become too complacent in recent years. We must be vigilant and realize that there are still threats to our pride. I never want you to forget that, even when you’re sitting in that chair, because what you’re responsible for is more important than anything else.”

“I will do you and all the previous Alphas proud,” I said, hoping that I would not be proven a liar by time.

There was a soft knock at the door. Emilia had arrived with some dinner. Axanar nodded towards me and left us alone.

“I asked Divad if he wanted to join us, but he said that he needs to spend some time studying. He’s really giving it his all. I hope he’s not overworking himself though,” she said.

“I’m sure he will be fine.” I took the food from her and took her hand, bringing her to sit beside me. We gazed out over the plains of Orestes. In the distance the mountain we had climbed rose into the sky, covered in mist that made it seem not quite real. I held her hand and squeezed it, still amazed that she had chosen to stay with me and give me her heart.

“Sometimes I think that I died with Ganang and this is all just a dream I am having in the afterlife. I can’t believe that I have been so lucky. I never thought you would stay with me here,” I said.

Emilia sighed and leaned her head against my shoulder. “Well, to be honest life on Earth had never really given me happiness. I guess when I think about it now I was just going through the motions because I didn’t think I had any alternative. As soon as I realized there was another option, well, there was no choice.”

“I hope you do not think that I forced you into this life. If you ever change your mind then you are free to leave,” I said.

Emilia leaned back and tilted her head. She looked at me strangely. “Naaro, I’m never going to leave. I want to be with you and see where life takes us. I want to see you become Alpha of this pride. I want to walk through different worlds with you and Divad to see what we can discover, and most of all I want to be your mate,” she said, curling her hand around my arm. “I never had a good example of a family growing up, and I wanted to make sure that if I ever had kids then I wanted their father to be the best man possible. My standards were so high I wasn’t sure that anyone could meet them, but then you came along and… you’re just incredible. I love you,” she said.

“I love you too,” I replied. I felt the glow of love warm my heart and I kissed her deeply. Everything was perfect in Orestes, and I vowed that it would remain the same for as long as I lived.

Born to a dying world, my only hope is to find a new home for my Pride.

I’m the Lioness of a pride born to a dying world.

My father treats me like a monster, stripping me of the ability to walk between worlds.

A mate has been chosen for me, Lanas, and he helps me break free of my bindings.

We travel to Orestes, the ancestral home, where I seek to win salvation for my people.

There I am faced with many challenges from people who think we are criminals and savages.

I also meet Mika, heir to their pride.

I have always considered myself a warrior and in the beginning, I saw Mika as a rival.

Could we stop seeing each other as enemies and become something more, perhaps even lovers?

If so then it requires three of us as Lanas has already been chosen as my mate.

But, as Lioness, my future lies with my people first.

I cannot think of love before I think of life, for there is a chance I may have to die to prove they are worth saving.
