“No idea.” Hale went back to studying the menu. “Maybe the officer got the number wrong. Who knows? Or it could be they’ve got the wrong people and they’re looking for someone else. They’ll figure it out. Maybe a burger.”

Hale started talking about lunch, but Van couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that his time was running out.

Chapter Nine

Elisa came awake to the sound of a knock at her door and wanted to curse whoever was on the other side.

She’d been having the sweetest dream. It was five days after that night she’d spent with Van and Hale and every single night since, she’d found herself dreaming about being with them again.

Most likely because Hale showed up wherever she was and suddenly all she could think about was sex. It was horrible. It was hot. It was very, very frustrating.

The man had eaten an ice cream cone in the middle of winter. They’d been at the festival two nights before and he’d been talking to her dad about the upcoming meteor shower, which she’d been assured would not bring an actual invasion. When Hale had become so interested in astronomical events she had no idea, but the man knew how to use his tongue. It wasn’t like he’d been doing anything weird. He’d been eating an ice cream cone and he was a licker, and all she’d been able to think about was his tongue. She’d stood there watching him, almost in a trance, and realized she was a complete pervert.

Is everything okay, Elisa? He’d looked up and found her staring.

She’d had to think fast. Just wondering what flavor that was.

And then his lips had curled up in the sexiest smirk. Peach. I know it’s a summer flavor, but I really like peach. I’ve just been craving it lately.

She hadn’t needed her damn coat anymore. She sometimes got hot flashes from the meds she was on. That was what had happened. Except this heat had come from a very specific place.

But in her dream she hadn’t had to worry about Hale thinking she was a complete weirdo. He’d been way too busy eating her peach while Van had cheered him on. Van had been behind her, his big hands cupping her breasts while his legs spread hers wide so Hale could get to her pussy.

She groaned in sheer frustration. She’d thought she could avoid them, but she’d underestimated how small the town was. When she went into Stella’s, usually one of them was in there either getting a coffee to go or having lunch. They would look at her with soulful eyes, and she would think she’d made a terrible mistake.

The knocking started again, this time louder.

“I know you’re in there, Ms. Leal. Gene told me you haven’t left yet.” The voice coming through the door unmistakably belonged to a woman, and a no nonsense one at that. “If you think you can wait me out, you’re wrong. I am a rock, and I don’t move. Ask anyone.”

Elisa shook her head and forced herself to get out of bed. Who the hell was at her door at… She glanced over at the clock. Damn it. It was past ten. It was a perfectly reasonable time to expect someone to be up and about. Especially when someone didn’t have a job yet. It was the weirdest thing. All of her interviews got canceled because of strange occurrences. She’d missed the one at the Trading Post because the road had been closed even though it had looked perfectly fine. Stella had told her she’d lost at poker and had to forgo hiring anyone at this time. She was scheduled for an interview up at the lodge tomorrow and hoped she managed to make it.

She wasn’t sure if she could stay as long as she wanted to without a job.

And the one her dad had offered her with the Galactic Security Council didn’t count.

She didn’t bother with her robe, throwing open the door and frowning at whoever was behind it.

Which turned out to be a blonde chick in nice heels and a chic coat. She had a Chanel bag on one arm and held a garment bag in the other. “Hello, I’m Gemma Wells. I work for the sheriff’s department, and now you do, too. I brought your uniforms and your work schedule. I told Nate that you were not working Christmas or New Year’s this year because you’re doing him a favor. You’re welcome.”

She strode into the motel room like she owned the place.

“Excuse me?”

“I know it seems like a lot, and I should have called you, but I’m more of a hands-on girl. See, we’ve been down a deputy for a long time, and we’re about to be down two because Cam is going part time. He does way more than you would think he does.” The woman seemed to make herself at home.
