“Cayman, Puck, and Kodiak.”

She put their names below mine. “Anyone else? What about Zeppelin and Magnet?”

“I might suggest intel support, but that can be done from here, so they can also continue to help with Purfleet,” I responded.

“What about Wren and Wilder? I’d prefer they remain on the investigation with me.”

“I’m good with that.”

“Easy enough. Shall we reconvene?”

“Hang on, I received another message from Doc.” I swiped my screen. “He’s saying there’s chatter about Altamira too.”

Nem pulled up a map of Mexico on the screen and dropped pins on both locations.

“Two different shipments going in opposite directions. One leaves Yavaros on the Gulf of California and travels across the Pacific Ocean, presumably to somewhere in Asia. The other leaves via the Gulf of Mexico and crosses the Atlantic Ocean headed to God knows where.”

“Exactly,” I said, studying the map.

“That covers the current investigations. If another comes in, we’ll need reinforcements.” Nem rolled her shoulders.

“K19 Security Solutions has a large pool to pull from.”

She leaned back in her chair. “Can I ask you something? If it’s none of my business or you’d rather not talk about it…”

“Why was I booted out of the CIA?” I’d anticipated the question would come sooner or later.

“Again, if you’d prefer not to discuss it…”

I scooted the chair closer to her and rested my arms on the edge of the table. “You know there was a big shakeup at the agency, involving the director as well as several in his inner loop.”

“I’m aware.”

“Most were prosecuted. Some are in prison.”

“Someone who’s now with K19 was the whistleblower, if I remember correctly. I was surprised she wasn’t named director.”

“Malin Kilbourne. She spent a number of years trying to prove her theories while, at the same time, avoiding a burn notice. I think, by the time it was all over, she wanted nothing to do with the CIA.” I looked up at her. “My story is a little different.”

“Ares, if—”

“I want to tell you, Nem.”

“Okay. Sorry, go ahead.”

“As you also know, Money McTiernan was appointed the replacement director.”

“I recall it being quite controversial.”

“He’s the one who fired me. He assumed I was in cahoots with the dirty agents since I was a deputy director. The only reason I was given that job was because the then chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was from Texas and the trafficking bust occurred in his state.”

“He was one of those arrested.”

“Exactly. It was part of the reason McTiernan decided I was dirty too. I doubt he bothered trying to prove it.”

“It’s a wonder you didn’t leave intelligence.”

“I felt lower the day I was fired than I ever have in my life. It was short-lived, though. Doc Butler called and offered me a job with K19.”
