His eyes veered from the wall, then at me. “You don’t know what I was going to ask.”

“The same team who conducted the surveillance did a thorough search of the entire complex. Both vacant and occupied units.”

He stood. “Ready?”

“For what?”

“Keep up,Nemesis. Purfleet. The industrial complex.”

“You’re welcome to visit either or both on your own. Should you require an escort, Cayman and Puck are both available.”

Ares shifted two piles of files with his arms when he rested his hands on my desk. He leaned in the same way he had in the conference room. “Neither Cayman nor Puck will be escorting me. You will.”

“No, I will not, Officer Kappas.”

ARES

If there was ever a contest for the best smug look, Margeaux “Nemesis” Jordan would win, hands down. While my initial supposition was her code name stemmed from the Greek goddess, now I was leaning heavier in the direction of the dictionary definition—a long-standing rival, an archenemy.

I watched as she picked up a crate from the credenza behind her and filled it with part of the mess on her desk. “I have actual investigative work to do, Officer Kappas. Things far more important than accompanying you on a visit to two locations I’ve already searched.”

While she spoke, she pulled two canvas bags from a desk drawer, filled them with more files, added her laptop and purse, then slung one over each shoulder.

“Need some help?” I asked when she picked up the crate.

“Nothing more than you getting out of my way so I can leave.”

“Where are you going?” I asked when she brushed past me.

“Somewhere I can work in peace.”

I eyed the stacks of crap she’d left behind. “You sure you don’t need any of this other stuff?”

“Good day, Ares,” she shouted more than said right before she got on the elevator. At the same time, Z walked up behind me.

“That lasted longer than I thought it would,” he said, looking at his watch.

“What did?”

“The two of you working in close proximity.”

I studied him. “Then, why—”

“Because she’s the best, Ares. You’d do well to keep that in mind. To be frank, I argued with Baissier to do as Nemesis asked.”

“And what was that?”

“To delay your involvement. Initially, I requested you join the investigation in a week or two.”

I didn’t miss Z’s use of Marchand’s code name. I knew the two had worked together extensively in the past.

Also, setting aside her chaotic methodologies, I knew how good Nemesis was, based on her brief alone.

“You should also know Nem’s best mate is Kennedy King. There’s no doubt you’d benefit from her expertise.”

“I heard there was no such person.” I’d always thought the superspy was as fictional as James Bond.
