Wren studied me. “Okay. If you’re sure.”

“Beyond certain.”

“Come on, and I’ll introduce you to Hanadarko. You’re gonna love her. God, I’m so relieved.”

“Hi,” I said as we came out and found the woman on her own in the kitchen. “I’m Margeaux. Most call me Nemesis or Nem.”

“Grace or Hanadarko.” She set down the empty glass she held, and I shook her outstretched hand. “Great code name, by the way.”

“Can I help you find anything?”

“I was looking for something to drink. Mayhem and I probably should’ve stopped on our way here.”

“Since you have a glass, I’m assuming you’re looking for something stronger than water.”

“How about this?” asked Wren, pulling a bottle of Booker’s from the pantry.

“Sure. One of my favorites. If you don’t mind.”

“I’ll join you. Neat or…”

“Booker’s? Neat, definitely.”

I poured two glasses and handed one to her.

“None for you?” she asked Wren, who rubbed her stomach.

“Not for another nine months at least.”

I turned around when I felt someone watching me, smiled, and raised my glass when I saw it was Ares. “Would you like one?” I asked.

“Maybe just one.” He got out a glass and poured his own. “Have you met Poseidon?”

I glanced into the sitting room. “Is he here? God, it’s been years.”

“We should get back to Millie,”Hanadarko said to Mayhem about an hour later. He and I had said a drama-free hello earlier. Every nuance of which was studied by Wren.

“I’d like to talk about our meetings if you’re not too tired,” Ares said after those staying in the cottages said goodnight.

“Not too tired, but famished.”

He smiled. “I made you a little something as a welcome-home surprise. A couple of things, actually.”

“You did? How…thoughtful. You didn’t have to.”

“But you’ll be really glad I did, since all I have to do is heat it up.” He pulled out a stool at the counter and motioned for me to take a seat.

“I’d offer to help, but even heating things up is beyond my skill level.”

He set three covered dishes on the counter. “Do you eat out every meal?”

“No, but I do eat a lot of salad. Already prepared ones.”

He put one of the dishes in the microwave, and within seconds, I knew what it was.

“You made curry?”

“I did. Your favorite, too.” He pulled the dish out, set it in front of me, then handed me a fork. “Spinach and cauliflower over rice.”
