“I am in agreement. We should include Poseidon in the meeting as well,” I suggested.

“Of course.” Nem stood and picked up her dish and the spoons. “I should probably clean this up and get some sleep.”

I put my hand on her shoulder. “Let me do it. You’ve been traveling all day.”

“You’re very good to me, Ares. Thank you. While I should argue with you and insist I can do it myself, I am utterly exhausted.”

“Go ahead. I’ll see you in the morning.” I motioned in the direction of the bedroom.

“Good night, then.”

I wondered if she felt as awkward as I did. Should we have kissed good night, or was this the more appropriate way for us to handle it?

Fortunately, I was exhausted too, given my lack of sleep the last two nights, so I fell asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow.

When I wokethe following morning, I found Nem in the kitchen with Poseidon.

“Something smells good,” I said, pulling out a stool and sitting at the counter.

Poseidon had a spatula in his hand and pointed to Nem. “Is she really a terrible cook, or does she just say that to get out of making meals?”

Nem and I both laughed.

“I haven’t seen her in action since I’ve been too hungry to risk it. She also says she’s a terrible dancer, but I didn’t find that to be true.”

“Is that right? I look forward to experiencing it for myself.”

I shot Poseidon a glare he didn’t miss.

“Are you talking about Nem?” Cayman asked, joining us. “She’s a great dancer.” He looked down at me. “Did you just growl?”

“It sounded more like a snarl.” Nem winked at me. “I arranged for a call with Baissier at eight hundred,” she added.

I checked the time. We had an hour. “Is there anything you want to review between now and then?”

Nem shook her head. “Your brief was quite thorough, Ares.” She looked between Poseidon and Cayman. “What about the two of you?”

“Do you want me to participate?” Cayman asked.

She thought it over for a few seconds. “I think you should do.”

Ambassador Marchand reiteratedthe support he’d said we’d have for the raid and asked for seven days to get everyone in place.

“Can everyone mobilize that quickly?” Nem asked.

“Affirmative,” Marchand responded.

“Before we end our call. I’d like to ask about Mithras. Oleander mentioned the coalition would understand the delay in her briefing me about him.”

Baissier nodded. “It would be premature for her to do so at this time.”

“Understood, sir. Thank you.”

While Nem was polite, I sensed her frustration, given I shared it. Mithras played a role in both operations we were in the midst of. I didn’t appreciate Marchand holding back information from his task force commanders. However, like Nem, I let it go.

“How do you feel about waiting a week?” I asked when the meeting ended.

“It’s far sooner than I anticipated he’d say.” She turned to Cayman. “Our team needs to get up to speed on the plan’s execution.”
