“I suppose I was both. Again, I’m sorry. I’ll apologize to Delfino as well.”
“Good.”
“Look, I still don’t know when I’m leaving, but I will be leaving, Bex.”
“I know.”
“But you will not be. You will remain here until I return. I need to know you’re safe. Do you understand?”
She nodded, and her eyes filled with tears. “What about you, Cay? How will I knowyou’resafe?”
“This is what I’m trained to do.”
“I know there were agents killed in Malta.”
It was a fact I couldn’t dispute. “There were.”
“So, again, how will I know you’re safe?”
“We will be in regular communication. Either myself or someone else from the team.”
“That doesn’t make me feel better.”
I took a step forward and rested my forehead against hers. “I understand, my darling. Please know that if I had any choice, it would be to remain here in Shere with you.”
“Why can’t you?”
“It would be easy to say it’s my duty, and while that is important, it’s more than that. We’re talking about Mithras, Bex. I have to be on the team that goes after him. I cannot risk him getting away again.”
“Mithras?”
“Moretti. Please understand I have to do this, Bex.”
“What will you do if you find him?”
“I will not stop, will not relent, until he’s dead.”

Cayman studied his mobile and swore under his breath.
“What is it?”
“Confirmation. It came quicker than I anticipated.”
“Moretti?”
He nodded. “Bexli, I have to go.”
“I understand.”
“Bex, I—”
I leaned up and brushed his lips with mine. “Be safe, Cay.”
