“I wouldn’t have wanted to go home.”

“You wouldn’t have been forced to. No victim we rescue is forced to do anything they don’t want to.”

“That’s good to know.”

“Are you feeling any better about Cayman leaving?”

“Honestly? Not at all.”

“Do you think you would if you were able to say goodbye to him?” She motioned toward the house with her head.

When I looked over my shoulder, I saw Cayman standing near the vehicles lined up in front of the house.

“I do.”

She smiled. “Go on, then.”

I jumped up and raced toward him. Cayman did the same, and when we came together, he lifted me in his arms.

“I couldn’t leave without looking into your eyes one more time.”

“I’m so glad you didn’t.”

“I meant what I said, Bex. I love you. I’ve told you again and again I’d do anything for you, but the truth is, I’d do anything but give up this mission. I must see it through for you, for the men and women I work with, for the other victims, but mostly for myself.”

“I understand. Truly.”

He lowered me to my feet but kept his arms around me. “I must go, but I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

Part of me wanted to ask him to promise, but I knew better. It was something he couldn’t do. He could promise to try, but there was no way he could guarantee he’d come back.

I cupped his cheek. “Be safe, my darling.”

His eyes bore into mine like they had earlier, but now wasn’t the time for me to tell him my feelings for him had changed. In fact, before I did, I had to make sure they really had. Was it the Cayman who’d rescued me I loved, or was it Cayman the man? I had to know for certain before issuing any declaration of love.

“When I return, we need to talk.”

“Yes. We do.”

Rather than the kind of kiss he’d given me earlier, this time, Cayman’s lips only brushed mine.

“Goodbye, Bex.”

Instead of saying goodbye, I took a step back and waved. I kept waving after Cayman got in the SUV and it drove away.

Once I was certain it was through the estate’s gate, I returned to sit next to Kima on the lawn.

“There’s something I’d like to discuss with you,” I began.

“Go ahead.”

“How does someone become an MI6 agent?” I asked.

“In order to qualify, a person needs to be a British citizen. There is a residency requirement as well. The next step is obtaining a degree.”

“What kind of degree?”

“The minimum is second class.”
