I nodded. “For the UK, Puck and I are present. To the best of my knowledge, Seshat remained in Malta to assist with victim reunification.”

“Correct,” Z confirmed.

“Tragically, our team lost two exemplary agents on Gozo, Vulcan and Beak. May they rest in peace.”

The other three repeated my words under their breath.

“Upon our return, we’ll need to replace at least one of them.”

“I did have one idea,” said Nem. “Jaicon Heart.”

It was a good suggestion. She’d worked with us on reunification after Felixstowe.

“Regarding the Maltese team, Poseidon, Fucile, and Sognatrice are on board. Delfino remained in Shere,” said Nem.

“Magnet took a rough hit on this op with the loss of Qetë and Zig,” said Ares.

“May they also rest in peace,” I added.

“Verity and Ehren are still in Malta. Rogue and Reaper from Zep’s team are with them,” he continued. “I believe they’re still assisting with reunification as well as the investigation.”

“While O isn’t part of any specific team, she’s also with us. Aside from Z and me, I believe we’ve covered most everyone,” said Nem.

“Wren and Wilder remain in Shere,” said Z.

“Mayhem and Hanadarko too,” Ares chimed in.

“Many thanks,” I said, looking around the table. “Any other loose ends I haven’t covered?”

“Besides Mithras and Pharaoh, whether there are other players remains unknown,” Z responded.

I nodded. “There’s also the matter of Felixstowe and where the victims transported in the ten shipping containers were to be delivered. Given Mithras was scrawled in the dirt of one, I can’t help but think he plays a role in that as well.”

“I agree,” said Nem.

“One more thing. Someone alerted Mithras of our impending arrival. We need to take a close look at where such information was shared and who could have leaked it. It wasn’t as simple as him tracking Oleander or Poseidon. He also knew the rest of us were on our way. I’m certain the explosives planted on thePerniciouswere intended to take us all out.”

The others nodded their somber agreement.

Once our meeting concluded,I returned to my seat. Even though Puck and Magnet were asleep, I was unable to do the same. Consequently, when we landed at Gatwick, I was irritable. I was also anxious to see Bexli but equally dreading her finding out what had happened in Sharm el-Sheikh. With her remaining at Shere, I had no doubt she would.

I’d thought a great deal about her during the flight. What would’ve happened to her had I died? Danger was an inherent risk in my line of work. Not usually to the degree it did on this mission. However, I still wondered if it was fair of me to pursue what felt like the beginning of a romance between us after the kiss we’d shared. On the other hand, maybe I’d made too much of it. There was also a chance that, once I arrived at home, she’d behave as though it had never happened.

If that was the case, I’d do everything I could to help her build a life for herself without me in it. I’d remain her friend as I had been since the day we met, but I’d gradually distance myself once she found someone else to love.

The idea felt like a dagger in my heart, but this wasn’t about me. I cared too much about Bexli to selfishly pursue her while knowing I faced death with every mission I undertook.

“Where is everyone?”I asked Wilder when we arrived in the early morning hours and I raced upstairs to find Bex’s bed empty.

Wilder poured a cup of coffee and offered it to me when I followed him into the kitchen.

“No, thanks.”

“To answer your question, Wren is sleeping. Kima and Bexli went for an early morning ride.”

“A ride? Where?”

“I would imagine from your stables.”
