Wilder put his hand on my arm. “You can do so tomorrow when you’re, uh, more coherent.”

“Right. Of course. Too pissed right now.”

“Why do you need to call your pops, Cay?” Poseidon asked.

“He needs to give the estate to Bex if anything happens to me.” I had a thought. “I could give it to hernow!”

“Hold up,” said Wilder. “I doubt it’s that simple. The estate is part of your ducal inheritance. If you die without heirs, it will revert to the Crown.”

“I should have sex with her, then,” I muttered. “Not that she’d agree to it.”

Wilder laughed. “Perhaps not tonight.”

“I did kiss her. It wasbrilliant.”

“Before we veer off on such a titillating topic, have you tried talking to Bexli?”

“She won’t.”

“Right. Not the answer to my question. Have youtried?”

“Nem said Bex wanted nothing to do with me.” I had another thought. “I can buy her a different house. One with as much land as my estate. Then she’d never have to worry. I could set up a trust for her too. More money than she could spend in a lifetime.” I choked up. “A lifetime without me in it.”

“Cayman—”

“Don’t try to talk me out of it. I’ve more money than the king. Well, maybe not the king, but it’s alotof money.”

“So you’ll give her a house, money to burn, and then what will Bexli do?”

“I don’t know. Find someone to marry, to build a family with.”

“And they’ll live in the house you gave her?”

All of what we’d both said sounded logical to me. Bloody painful, but logical.

Poseidon’s eyes met mine. “What if she doesn’t marry? What if she can’t because the only thing she really wants in life is to be with you?”

“She doesn’t, Kai. She never has.”

“But you want to give her a house?” Wilder asked.

“She’ll be safe. She won’t have to worry.”

“What are you suggesting? She’ll never leave the house in order to avoid the danger in everyday life? Accidents? Illness? Is it your intention to make her a canary in a cage?”

“No, of course not. It’s just…I don’t know. What else can I do?”

“Fight for her, you bloody idiot. Go to her. Tell her you love her. Get down on your knees and beg her forgiveness.”

“Wilder, you haven’t been listening. She won’t see me.”

“You haven’t tried. Tomorrow morning, get your arse out of bed, pound on Delfino’s door, and demand to see her. Then grovel, my friend.”

I looked up at him. “I’ll tell her I love her more than life itself.”

“Now you’re getting the picture. Just, um, don’t mention the house or your intention of impregnating her so you have an heir.”

“Right. That will come later.”
