“By all means, tell me.”

“Whittaker Abbey.”

“Are you certain the duke would be willing?”

“Absolutely,” said Wilder, walking into the room. “And as far as Bexli’s safety, there isn’t a more secure location in all of England.” He looked directly at Z. “Including Vauxhall Cross. Not to mention, she’ll be comfortably ensconced in Dorchester House with Wren.”

“Cayman?” Z prompted.

“As long as Shiver is on board, I would be in his debt.”

“While my brother may be, the person I spoke with is his wife, Losha. As long as she’s okay with it, Shiver is.”

“And?”

Wilder cocked his head. “I hardly would’ve gotten this far into the conversation if she weren’t.”

“Right. Many thanks. I’ll speak with Bexli now.”

I found her in the solarium with Wren. When I walked in, Bex stood and rushed over to me. I wrapped my arms around her and rested my head against hers.

“I told her,” said Wren. “She needed to know.”

“I would not have suggested otherwise.”

“Wren said she and I will be staying in Bedfordshire.”

“I’ve just learned of it myself. Are you comfortable doing so?”

“Of course, but I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“You will not be. In fact, I’d enjoy the company.”

Bexli turned to her. “Will you excuse us? Or I suppose we could go elsewhere.”

“No, stay here. I need to speak to Wilder anyway.”

Bexli waited until Wren had closed the door, then led me over to the sofa. “I already know what you’re going to say, but…Nonna.”

I nodded, anticipating this. “No person here—not even Nonna—would allow you to sacrifice yourself for her. I doubt you’re who he’s truly after anyway.”

“Who is he after?”

“I’ve no doubt his intention in Sharm el-Sheikh was to take out as many people working in the UN’s coalition as he could. We’re his number-one enemy. By essentially crippling the coalition or even ending it altogether, he and his cohorts continue as they have been.” I studied her as she processed what I’d said.

“Makes sense.”

I reached up and touched her face with my fingertips. “Have I told you how proud I am of you? A perfect score on your exam? Well done, Bexli.”

She smiled in the way she had so often in the years I’d known her. Big and broad, like the sun had come out from behind a cloud. “Thank you.”

“And you’ve already lined up an interview with Pinch. My goodness!”

“No doubt it’s a favor to someone else. Wren said he and Wilder are practically brothers.”

“He wouldn’t waste his time if he didn’t believe you were a qualified candidate.”

“I hate how much of my life I’ve wasted, with no useful purpose, Cay. It fills me with regret.”
