“Hey, Maya.”

“We have that asshole who shot at you.”

“Okay, hang tight.”

He pocketed his phone, then looked at Officer Bennit once again.

“My teammates have one of the Black Road Resistance men down the road.”

Officer Bennit blew out a long breath and looked down the road. It curved and was impossible to see them from this location, but he stood for a long time looking down the road.

“They’ll need to let him go.”

“What?” Tate ran a hand through his hair. “You can’t just let him go. The man shot at you. He fucking shot at me. He hit my truck and someone is going to have to pay for that.”

Officer Bennit shook his head and turned to look him in the eye. “I know you think this is ludicrous, but I don’t have jurisdiction to arrest them.”

“Sir, it’s a fact we’re new here and have yet to learn how things work. But, there is no place on earth people can blindly shoot at others, especially police officers, and just walk away. What the hell is this all about?”

His teammates, Spencer Lawson, Aidyn Dunbar, and Adelaide Masters, stood around the officer, disbelief written on their faces plain as day.

Officer Bennit shrugged. “The sheriff will be setting up a town council meeting to discuss how to handle this latest round of activity from the BRR. They’ve been misbehaving lately and…” he shrugged. “It’s complicated.”

Chapter2

Lara stood in the corner of her bakery and surveyed the damage. Flour and sugar were strewn all around. They had tossed the coffeemaker on the floor, pieces of broken coffee cups were scattered in the mess, and all she could think was that she didn’t have time for this. And it was getting expensive.

She heard the sirens and gunshots outside and her stomach curdled. Usually, Glen Hollow was a quiet little town and the nicest place to live. But these past few weeks, it had been anything but. Now her father was out there chasing those jackasses and they were shooting at him. Afraid to walk to the window in case a stray bullet came through the large front window, a streak caught her attention, and tears immediately sprung to her eyes.

The lettering on her front window, Lara’s Delights, her bakery’s name painted on the big window and her door, were scraped through, a large gash in the paint distorting the name. Her name. She’d waited forever for the painter to come down from Lexington to paint her door and front window. Those little bastards did more damage this time than they had in the past and she was sick and tired of dealing with it.

Her dad’s squad car squealed to a stop outside. He rushed in and pulled her into his body for a big hug. She inhaled his musky scent and absorbed the warmth he offered because she needed it. Her body shook and her dad’s arms tightened around her.

After a few minutes, he stepped back and looked into her eyes. His eyes were filled with concern.

“Honey, are you alright? Did they hurt you?”

“No.” She shook her head. “I mean, yes, I’m alright and no, they didn’t hurt me. But look what they did to my shop, Dad.”

“We can clean the mess, honey.”

“Again. You mean we can keep cleaning it over and over and I keep losing money? I feel very targeted here, Dad. This is the third time this month they’ve broken in here. Not that I want it to happen to others, but they have robbed no one else in town three times in a month.”

She pointed to the writing in the flour on the floor. “See ya soon.”

“Now they’re taunting me. Those little fuckers.”

“Lara!” He shook his head and swiped a hand down his jaw.

“I’m tired of this, Dad. I’ve done nothing to those little shits.”

“We’ll figure something out.”

A white pickup truck pulled into her parking lot. She inhaled deeply and picked her way slowly across the slippery floor. She reached the door just as a tall, dark-haired man did. He pushed the door open and stepped inside, then looked around at the mess.

“I’m sorry. As you can see, I’m not open right now.”

“I’m sorry about that. I actually stopped here because I saw Officer Bennit’s squad car here and hoped to chat.”
