“Okay. I just hate this.”

“Me too.”

The Jeep came roaring into her parking lot, and Lara screamed. “He’s here. Oh my God, he’s here.”

“You get in the back, Lara. You hear me?”

Lara stood and tried to make her legs work, but they felt like lead. Once she’d made it to the kitchen door, she heard him revving his engine out front and tires squealed on the blacktop. She dropped behind the counter to hide. It went on and on. Through the glass of the display case she watched as that same kid, the one with the dark hair, spun cheerios in her parking lot.

“He’s just making a mess of the parking lot. He’s spinning cheerios.”

“Don’t let him see you, Lara. He might have his gun.”

Her breathing grew thin, and she felt like she couldn’t get air. The sirens grew loud again, and Lara saw her father’s squad car coming up the road, which caused the kid in the Jeep to peel out of her parking lot and up the road, passing her father’s squad car, who spun around in her parking lot and sped off after the BRR kid.

“Lara, honey, what’s happening?”

She forgot Shianne was on the phone. “Oh. My dad came down the road and the guy in the Jeep sped off. Dad turned around in the parking lot and took off after him.”

“Thank God he isn’t there anymore.”

“Yeah. Shit, that was scary.”

“I know. How about we go do some target practice after work tonight?”

“Yes. That sounds like a great idea. I need to practice and start carrying again.”

“Me too.”

Tate’s truck pulled into the lot and her heart raced for a different reason. “Hey, I have to open the door for Tate.”

Shianne chuckled on the other end of the phone, but she didn’t wait to listen to her teasing.

She watched as Tate stepped from his vehicle and looked at the burnt rubber in the parking lot. He turned his gaze toward her at the door. His jaw was tight, and his eyes looked hardened.

“Are you hurt?”

He strode toward her, and she stepped back to let him in the bakery.

“No. Just scared.”

He stepped close and pulled her to his body, and her arms instantly wrapped around his waist. His arms engulfed her and she felt safe and warm. She closed her eyes and inhaled his fresh masculine scent.

“I’m here now. You’re okay.”

His words soothed her; his firm body felt like armor wrapped around her and she relaxed as he held her.

After a few minutes, he pulled back, and she tilted her head up to look at him. It was electric when his lips molded to hers. His whiskers brushed her face, and she savored the roughness of it. She opened her mouth, and his tongue touched her lips then slid inside. Their tongues danced with each other, and her heart skipped when she tasted her cookies on him.

The sounds of approaching sirens had them pulling apart, but he stared into her eyes for a long time. He touched his lips with his fingers as if he’d never felt a kiss before. Then he licked his lips before stepping back.

A car door slammed. Her father entered the bakery and broke the spell that had fallen over them.

Chapter15

Tate drove to the base at the butt crack of dawn like he’d promised, but he missed his coffee and cookies. And Lara. He missed seeing her smile first thing in the morning.

Aidyn sat in the passenger seat, yawning and stretching. “I should have taken the night shift.”
