“That’s my boy.”

“Talk to you later, Dad. Aidyn and I just got to the construction site, and I want to read through everything.”

“You got it, Tate. Love you.”

“Love you too, Dad.”

Aidyn sat next to him at the front of the desk and opened his laptop, simultaneously taking a large drink of the bitter coffee.

“Ugh. That’s harsh.”

Tate laughed. He clicked on the email from his dad, then opened the attachment and began reading the treaty.

As he read through it, the verbiage he’d hoped to find was there. Usually a treaty was between different nations, but in the preamble it stated that the BRR insisted it be called a treaty, as if they were their own nation.

There were consequences for breaking a treaty and the consequences listed in this matter were:

“…the treaty is hereby broken upon the death of one party at the hands of the other party. The consequences of death at the hands of the opposing party are the end of the treaty and the BRR will become US citizens and will uphold the laws of the US government and will abide by said laws. Forcible removal from the lands...”

Tate continued reading, then sat forward, “Aidyn, here it is.”

“Repeated offenses of vandalism, fear mongering, and threats of violence, up to or including death, will irrevocably break this treaty.” He continued reading the definition, “in this case, it means consecutive thirty days of the offending action.”

“They’ll stop before their thirty days are up. And as far as we’re aware, they have killed no one. But the damage to businesses has been ongoing now for ten days. Plus, I think we can convince the president that shooting at a police officer and hitting the vehicle of a citizen is a threat to the deputy, you, Adelaide, Spencer, and myself as we were behind the squad car and in danger.”

Aidyn nodded, “Let’s use it. What do we have to lose?”

Two hours later, Spencer and Adelaide pulled into the parking lot, looking ready to tackle the day.

Spencer opened the construction office door first, “I just saw Baxter out by the basement of the main building. He said you’re going up to the BRR today?”

Tate stood and stretched. “Yes, Aidyn and me. We’re going to see if we can work on a better truce.”

Spencer nodded. “I like it. Do you need backup?”

“Not this time. Just keep your phones on in case we need help and watch for any exacerbated activity while we’re up there. They may take our interference as a sign of aggression and start acting up again.”

“Will do.”

Adelaide set her laptop on the table and logged in.

Tate and Aidyn left the construction trailer and headed for his truck. As he pulled from the construction lot, he passed the first road up the mountain.

Aidyn glanced over. “You don’t want Baxter to know we’re going up?”

“No. He’s too mad right now at the delays and I think we need to remain cool. At least this time.”

Aidyn laughed and put his head on the headrest behind him.

Tate turned up the next road leading to what he hoped was Everett Howard and a resolution to the unrest with the BRR.

He saw something glimmer in the sunlight ahead and slowed down as they neared. Within seconds, two four-wheelers popped up onto the road from the brush. The two men hopped off their vehicles and stood between their four-wheelers and Tate’s truck. Their arms were crossed over their chests and their jaws were locked in confidence.

He stopped his truck and said to Aidyn. “Well, here goes.”

“Yep.” Aidyn opened his door and stepped out first, Tate followed suit. They strode to the front of his truck.

“I’m Tate Vickers and this is my teammate, Aidyn Dunbar. We’re here to see Everett Howard.”
