“Hey, there. I hear you’ve been busy today.”

“How did you hear that?”

“Lara, we share many of the same customers. Remember, there’s only about twelve hundred people in this town. Good gravy, how do you even have to ask that?”

She gave her head a sharp shake and paused to get her thoughts in order. “Something’s up with my dad and the BRR.”

“You mean something more than usual? What’s happened that you finally want to see it for what it is?”

“Tate and...” She cleared her throat.

“Tate? You’ve been seeing him a lot these days.”

“He was here.” A car drove by and she watched it pass. “This morning. I mean, he and Aidyn were here to meet with my dad.”

“Oh, now that’s interesting. What happened?”

“I don’t know. He raised his voice—my dad. He raised his voice a couple of times then realized people could hear and lowered it. I couldn’t hear anything. Tate wouldn’t really tell me anything. We were having a conversation then he was called away. It’s...I told him...”

“I heard the ambulance was called out to the base.”

“Oh no. That’s terrible. Do you know what happened?”

“No. Not yet.” Shianne’s voice lowered. “You told Tate what?”

“About my parents and their secrets.”

“Oh, wow. How did he take it?”

“He made me laugh with a story about being weird about cookies or something. But we didn’t get to finish our conversation. He got called away.”

“I’m sorry, Lara. I know that was hard to admit. You’ve kept that to yourself for the most part.”

“I told you.”

“I know. But I mean you haven’t told anyone else.”

Lara stared out the window for a few moments then sighed. “No. It’s embarrassing, to be honest.”

Shianne chuckled. “Why are you embarrassed? Your parents should be embarrassed.”

“I guess.”

“Hey, are you alright?”

“Yeah. I just needed to hear your voice. It’s been a weird day.”

“Yeah. Lately they’re all weird with the BRR creating havoc. I think they tried getting into my shop last night. The locks in the back are scratched up like a screwdriver or something was used on them. My dad just came and changed the locks for me.”

“Oh no.” Lara sank against the counter near her coffee machine. She watched the mailman leave mail in her box near the road and started toward the front door. “I’m sorry to hear that Shi.”

“They didn’t get in, so there’s that at least.”

She sauntered to her mailbox. The outside air was clean smelling and warm. Her shoulders relaxed slightly and she decided she should sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather a bit more. Maybe she was letting the BRR keep her cooped up and scared and that wasn’t good for her mental health either.

“I just stepped outside to get my mail. Shi, we need to sit outside and have a drink after target practice tonight.”

Shianne laughed. “That sounds fantastic.”
