Page 50 of Finding Lara

“Baby, don’t worry. I told you, there’s nothing so important at the site right now that I can’t take a few minutes. Aidyn is out there, covering. It’s all good.”

Within a few minutes, her dad’s squad car pulled into the lot. He got out of his car, opened the hood and looked inside. After a moment, he shook his head then closed the hood. Tate walked outside and Lara followed him.

“Problems with your vehicle?”

“Yeah.” Keaton looked around. “Let’s head inside.”

As soon as they entered the bakery, her dad kissed her temple, then walked to the coffeepot and poured himself a cup. He turned to Tate and raised his cup. Tate shook his head.

Finally, her dad started explaining. “So, I was chasing Kent and suddenly my car stopped working. It shut down. Luckily, I just navigated a corner and straightened out my squad car or I would have crashed.”

“Oh, my god. Dad. You need to call the garage and have it looked at.”

“I will, honey. As soon as my nerves calm.”

He sat at the little blue table, and his radio buzzed.

“Keaton, we just had a call from three citizens that their cars just quit while they were driving. Two of them had an accident. You’re needed at the corner of First and Jackson streets.”

“Ten-four. I’m on my way.”

Her dad looked up at Tate. “What do you make of that? Everyone’s car stopping at the same time?”

“I think it means someone has a way to shut things down, electronically. I wonder if that has anything to do with the power going off yesterday?”

Her dad stood.

“That’s certainly something to investigate.”

Chapter29

Tate called Spencer.

“Hey, do you still live here?”

“Shut up.”

Spencer laughed.

“So, here’s something I’d like you to ponder. A while ago, Keaton Bennit was chasing Kent and his squad car shut down. No radio, no siren, no electronics.”

“What?”

“Right. So, run that through your electronics brain and add in the power outage in town yesterday and the fact that three citizens called the police station, right after Keaton halted his chase, with the same issue. They had an accident because their cars shut down.”

“No fucking way!” He heard Spencer moving to another location in the house, he was still using crutches, so it was cumbersome. “Where are you now?”

“I’m on my way back to the base. Kent was watching the bakery, and I ran out to make sure Lara was safe.”

“Okay. Let me do some research on this and I’ll call you back. Are you coming home tonight?”

“Yes. And if Lara doesn’t feel safe, I’m bringing her with me.”

Spencer chuckled. “Okay. See you later.”

The line went dead and he dropped his phone into his cup holder in the truck. He’d promised Lara he’d pick her up at four today and she complained because she had work to do. They had slept little last night, not that he was complaining. But he’d been up at the ass crack of dawn, and he needed some rest.

He pulled into the construction site and saw Aidyn walking back to the office from the middle of the site.
