“I walked.”

“From where?”

“I’m a block down the road. We believe the BRR has scramblers and is interfering with electronic signals. The power signals are huge, but they’re also able to stop vehicles from operation and, as you can see, your security equipment, too.”

“Oh, my god, that’s so scary. What are they after?”

“We’re not sure. I’ve got my team working on some things in the meantime.”

“The BRR is shutting down the power?”

“We believe so.”

“Oh my god. What about the hospital?”

“They’re on generators.”

That’s when Tate’s eyes rounded. He pulled his phone from his back pocket and tapped a number. “Aidyn, we need a couple of generators. One at the house, one here at the bakery. Before everyone buys them up, I need you to grab them from the general store.”

He pocketed his phone again and took her hand. “It isn’t safe for you to be here. I need you to come with me to the house where we can protect you.”

“Why are they after me? It makes no sense.”

“I know it doesn’t and for the time being, we just don’t know. But I promise to keep you safe until we find out and can stop it.”

“Okay.” She started toward the kitchen. “I have to turn off the oven. It’s gas.”

He nodded and followed her into the room.

She turned the knob on the oven to shut it off, then touched the corner of a cookie, to see they’d cooled. As she washed and dried her hands she noticed Tate peering at the side of her fridge. She transferred the swiftly cooling cookies to the rack and covered them with plastic wrap. Who knew how long she’d be away.

Tate pulled away from her refrigerator, then turned to her stove, his flashlight out as he looked all around it.

“What are you looking for?”

“Shut offs. Settings. Depending on the generator Aidyn can find, we may have to run your refrigerator on propane if it’s capable. Your stove and oven are fine. I’m just checking.”

She took a deep breath and her tummy rolled inside. She was ready for life to get back to normal. And soon!

Chapter31

Tate helped Lara close up the bakery and secure it as much as they could. Though he tried preparing her for the fact that, just like last time, they could get in if they wanted to. Luckily, she was pragmatic about it. He hoped.

A motor sounded outside the back door and he halted her progress down the hall behind him.

“Stay here a moment.”

He cracked the door open and saw Aidyn sitting outside on a UTV from the construction site.

“Your chariot awaits. No electronics on this baby!”

Tate laughed and reached back to take Lara’s hand and pull her to the door.

“We won’t have to walk after all. Aidyn brought us a ride.”

There was a generator in the back dump box and he fist bumped Aidyn.

“Nice work.”
