“Sounds good.”

She turned to face him. “I’ll need to go home and get clothes if I’m staying here.”

He smiled at her. “As soon as Aidyn finishes with the generator, the three of us can go over to your place and get what you’ll need.”

Her cheeks tinted again. “Okay.”

“I have to call the sheriff and do a little work. Are you alright here?”

“Yes. I’ll be fine. I’ll start on grocery shopping.”

Adelaide called out. “Oh, we have a showing at the sewing factory tomorrow. We can negotiate the busted-out windows being replaced as long as it doesn’t rain and get everything wet inside.”

“Perfect. Thanks Addy.”

“We need to meet there at nine in the morning.”

“Got it. Send a message to everyone.”

He walked through the dining room to the living room, where it was quieter, and dialed the sheriff.

“Sheriff Cranford.”

“Hi, Sheriff, this is Tate Vickers.”

“Hi, Tate. I’m assuming you’ve heard of the latest electrical issues?”

“Yes, sir. That’s why I’m calling. We think they’re testing electronics scramblers. I’d recommend you find an older car or two to use until we stop the BRR from disrupting the power grid.”

“How old?”

“Old enough that it doesn’t rely on electronics to run. No computers on board. We’re researching what they’re using now and will take action to stop it as soon as we have our information buttoned up. In the meantime, you’ll need to look for a generator for the police station, so your computers and systems won’t be interrupted at their whim. It may also be a good idea to bring in some police officers or perhaps an advance team from the base to help here, so there isn’t mass chaos once the townsfolk figure out what’s happening and who’s responsible.”

“We have generators here, so we’re covered. Do you really think it’s going to get worse?”

“I think we have to operate under that assumption for safety’s sake.”

He heard squeaking in the background and imagined the sheriff leaning back in his chair.

“I’ll see what I can do about that, Mr. Vickers. You stop those assholes from creating a mockery of our town. They’ve had it far too easy lately.”

“Thanks to your deputy.”

Silence. For a few moments. Then his voice was soft. “Yep. I’m aware.”

Chapter32

Lara finished uploading the grocery list on the app for Paxton’s Grocery, then turned to see about ordering something from the diner.

She dialed their number and leaned against the counter.

“Homemade in the Hollow.”

“Hey there, it’s Lara Bennit. I’d like to order dinner to be picked up, please.”

“Okay. What can I get for you?”

She tried placing whose voice was on the other end and didn’t recognize it.
