“Yeah, that’s why I’m calling. Tate and the crew are researching some ideas on this and asked me to get the name of the point-of-sale software you use at the store.”

“Okay. I’ll have to dig in the file cabinet for the exact name since my computer is off.”

“What about using your hotspot on your phone?”

Shianne was quiet for a moment, then growled. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.”

“It doesn’t matter, Shi.”

“Okay, the computer is booting back up. In the meantime, Sharon Jackson was in here before the power went out to pick up her dress. She said your mom is sick again.”

“Yeah. I don’t know what’s going on over there. Tate and I went out there a while ago and she had fallen out of bed and was coughing. We put her back in bed and she told us to go. The kitchen was spotless, as if no one has cooked in it for a long time. But you know my parents have been sneaky and quiet about things for a long time, so I don’t ask questions anymore.”

“I know, honey. I’m sorry. My mom said she came into the bakery today and you looked good. And she just doesn’t stop raving about your cookies.”

Lara laughed. “Well, that’s nice to hear. I always love seeing your mom. She gives the best hugs. And she got me started on baking in the first place, so she gets that credit too!”

“Okay, here it is. It’s called PoSTS. Point of Sale Technology Systems.”

“Thank you. I’ll let Tate and company know.”

“Sounds good. So, are you staying there?”

Lara chuckled. “Are you fishing?”

“Yes.”

“For a while, until we know I’m safe. Kent has been watching the bakery. Or me. But he was outside watching the bakery from the road today.”

Shianne gasped. “Oh no. What the hell is wrong with that kid? He sure has it in for you.”

“I know and I don’t know why.”

“When you told him you wouldn’t trade with him, did something bad happen?”

“No. I didn’t even tell him. I told Brenner and Ramsay when they came down. Kent has never been up close to me.”

“Was that woman who came in Kent’s mom?”

“I don’t know. She surprised me when she said ‘her son’ and I didn’t think to ask who her son was.”

“Did you tell Tate?”

“Not yet.”

Chapter33

Tate stood from the dining room chair where he and his team sat on their computers. Lara was reading a book in the living room. He smiled when he entered the living room and saw her curled up at the end of the sofa.

“Hi.” She smiled at him when she saw him.

“Hi.” He sat next to her. “So, Aidyn and I are heading out. I’ll be on a mission and unable to answer my phone. If you need anything, Spencer and Adelaide will be here until ten. After that, Maya and Henry will be home. I’m sorry I won’t be here to introduce you to them.”

She closed her book and set it on the table next to the sofa. “It’s alright. I’m a big girl.”

He brushed the backs of his fingers along her cheek. “That you are.”

She sighed and laid her hand against his on her cheek. He saw her swallow, then he leaned in and kissed her lips lightly.
