Tate laughed. “You’ve slept through bombs in Afghanistan.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t smell the baking. Good thing the Taliban didn’t cook.”

They all laughed, and Tate’s heart swelled. This was going to work out. His team was solid, they were going to get those BRR assholes to settle their shit and leave this town alone, and Lara… She fit in perfectly with the crew. She filled his heart with emotions he didn’t know he lacked until he met her. She was perfect for him.

Chapter36

Lara made omelets for the four operatives here in the house and as soon as Spencer and Adelaide walked in from their night shift, she had new ones made for them.

“Dammit, Lara. You’re going to spoil us, and I’ll kick anyone’s ass who tries to stop it.” Spencer boomed.

She laughed and began cleaning up the kitchen. Tate had said he’d be back in an hour to escort her to the bakery and, while she thought as long as the power was on she’d be safe, she wanted him there with her. Plus, they intended to install the generator on her building so she would always have power.

Her phone rang and she saw her father’s name.

“Good morning, Dad.”

“Good morning. Where are you? I’m at your house and you aren’t here, and you weren’t at the bakery this morning.”

“I’m at a friend’s.”

“Shianne said you weren’t with her.”

She sighed and laid the dishrag on the edge of the sink. She wasn’t ready to tell him about Tate and her. “What do you need, Dad?”

He was quiet for a moment. “I wanted to make sure you’re alright.”

“You weren’t worried last night.”

“I was worried. I had to deal with your mother last night. She said you came over with a man and helped her back into bed.”

“Yes. Tate came with me to help her.”

“She’s been having more issues than usual lately. I’m taking care of her, though, and we’ll get it sorted.”

“Has the doctor said anything specific?”

“No. Nothing different on that front.”

“What’s her diagnosis to begin with, Dad?”

“Lara. Your mom wants her privacy.”

“How is telling your daughter what’s wrong an invasion of privacy? I don’t…”

“Lara. We’ve been over this. Over and over.”

Lara closed her eyes and leaned against the counter. Her parents were so weird about her mom’s illness. It often set her off on a tangent, which Shianne dutifully listened to, then changed the subject.

She took some deep breaths, then wearily said, “I have to go, Dad. I’ll be at the bakery in a while.”

“I’m on duty today, so I’ll stop by.”

“Okay.” She ended the call, already feeling exhausted from dealing with her parents once again. They had so many secrets between them, and she wasn’t privy to any of them. It was amazing in such a small town that anything could be a secret.

The back door opened, and Tate strode in. The concern on his face when he looked at her was clear.

“Hey, are you okay?”
