“Dad. Why aren’t you answering me?”

“It’s hard to answer when I don’t know who it was.”

“Really? Because there are a lot of women up on the mountain who want you to honor your word?”

“What are you insinuating?”

“I’m insinuating that you’re involved in some way with the BRR and it has drawn me into it. I’m sick of being used to get back at you. Whatever is going on up there. With you. You must end it.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking of me.”

“What did you get yourself involved in?”

“I have to go, Lara.”

The line went dead and she pocketed her phone. Tate’s jaw clenched as he looked into her eyes.

Lara sighed. “I can’t imagine what he’s involved in.”

“I can’t either.” He kissed her forehead. “You’ve delivered your message, and he knows you suspect something. Let’s go home and eat and ignore this for a while. I have to go back out tonight, and I’ll see if I can find out more about what’s happening up there.”

“Okay.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist, looking for a comfort only he could provide; he wrapped her in his warm, powerful arms.

“I made that plate of cookies for your teammates. Can we run them by on our way to my place?”

“Sure.”

She pulled the groceries from the refrigerator and repacked them in the crate Paxton’s had left. Then Tate grabbed the Instant Pot and called to his parents.

Sophie and Gaige came back and helped them carry food items to the car. Sophie laughed. “Nice ride. That was great to think about the older vehicles.”

“Yeah. It’s working for us for the time being. Baxter at the construction site has been cool as well.”

Once they had loaded the vehicle, Lara locked up the bakery, Gaige and Sophie climbed in the back seat, and Tate drove them around the front to get into their vehicle.

Just as they turned onto the road, the Jeep from the hill, with Kent driving, barreled past them and sped off down the road.

“Was he watching?”

Tate shook his head. “I didn’t see him anywhere. Unless he was hiding somewhere.”

“It’s creepy that he can watch unnoticed.”

He leaned over and touched her face with his fingers. “I know. Remember to be careful when you’re here.”

“I will.”

“I plan on getting this under control soon.”

She laid her hand against his. “I know you will.”

Chapter43

Lara gave the Tate’s parents a tour of her home and Sophie was in the spare bedroom settling in. Gaige sat in the living room on his computer while she gathered plates and silverware and set the table.

The brisket was still in the Instant Pot and hot, so she pulled it from inside and set it on a platter. She’d made broccoli and carrots to go with it and those were on the stove resting in the pan.
