He heaved out a breath and for the first time, Lara sobbed.

He put his arm around her and pulled her close, but his eyes were on the hills and surrounding area as were his teammates.

When they reached the road at the bottom of the hill, his dad pulled into the parking area and pulled his keys from his pocket and reached them over to Aidyn. Henry opened his door as well, “I’ll ride with Aidyn.”

Lara sniffed. “Who was shot?”

Aidyn heard her through the comm unit. “Everett.”

“My dad?” She asked.

“I couldn’t see him.”

She nodded. “What about Faye?”

He looked at her, his eyebrows rose. “She is Kent’s mom. She told me all about her and my dad.”

He nodded and Aidyn sighed. “She was shot too. One of them shot her.”

Lara sniffed. Then looked out the windshield. “There’s going to be a war.”

Chapter47

Tate’s mom helped him put his tux jacket on. He’d promised Lara they’d go to the ball. And after all the commotion of the past week, he was damned sure going to show up there. His entire team. He knew she didn’t care that much, but after her father’s funeral and her mom sent off to rehab, she needed something to be normal. And, he wanted to see her in her dress.

His mom brushed the invisible lint from his shoulders, and he turned slowly to hug her. “You look beautiful. I’m glad you and dad decided to join us.”

“It was rather hard saying no to Shianne. That girl is a force.”

“That she is.”

His dad entered the room and chuckled. “I never dreamed I’d be going to a formal ball when we agreed to come down here.”

Tate laughed. “It was the last thing I expected too.”

They exited the bedroom and waited in the living room for Lara. She dressed in their bedroom alone. She wanted to surprise him. Why not let her have some fun? She’d been through an emotional rollercoaster this week.

He stood near the kitchen door. He didn’t want to get his slacks wrinkled. After all the instructions from Shianne, he half joked they should just walk to the ball.

The bedroom door opened and he turned to see Lara glide down the hall. She looked magnificent. The gown flowed around her like a princess dress. Her words, not his. But now he saw what she meant. Shouldn’t every girl feel like a princess some time in her life?

He tapped his pocket, checking that he had all he needed. Her lip gloss, her powder, and the tickets. But his eyes never left hers.

He stepped toward her and held his hands out to her. The instant she touched him, he felt the electricity flow through them both. He hoped he never lost that feeling.

“You’re the most beautiful woman in the world.”

His dad chuckled and his cheeks flamed. Tate turned to his mom. “You know what I mean.”

His dad pulled his mom in for a hug. “I think you’re the most beautiful woman in the world.”

He shrugged at Lara and kissed her lips. “Stunning. You take my breath away.”

“You are the most handsome man in the world.” He kissed her again, then turned and held his arm out for her to take. The four of them walked outside to the waiting limousine.

He helped Lara slide in with all her layers, then he stiffly sat and moved over for his parents. The driver opened a bottle of champagne and poured them each a glass. He held his high. “I’d like to toast the Vickers family.” He turned to Lara. “Which you are now part of.”

His mom giggled, and they tapped glasses. The ride was brief. Porter’s Steakhouse was the host, and the drive was only ten miles.
