“So, how long have you had a crush on your brother’s ex?” Harrison’s question pulls me back to our booth.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Yeah. I’m the one being ridiculous.” He waves down a waitress and orders us our usual Sunday night elixir.

Sunny finishes her song, and the place breaks out into subdued applause. I blow out a whistle that sounds a lot like a cat call.

She laughs and speaks into the microphone. “Thanks, everyone. That song was calledMerry Go Roundby Kacey Musgraves. It’s all about having traditions passed down to you that you don’t want to keep. This next one is a bit more fun. It’s an adaptation of The Rolling Stones,Waiting on a Friend.”

I hold my beer in the air to salute her.

“You’re really going to sit there and tell me you don’t want to fuck her senseless?” I slam the glass down, and golden ale sloshes onto the table. He can be as crude as he wants, but not with Sunny.

Harrison shrugs off my warning glare. “What? She’s hot. I’d fuck her.”

Jesus. “She’s like a sister to me. Next subject.” I knock back a deep swallow and focus on the stage.

“Like a sister. Good to know.” He angles his body so he can better watch Sunny. “I bought myself a full membership.”

“Isn’t that like a million dollars?” Harrison’s partner gave him two passes, and he took me once. Something I’m sure the partners didn’t appreciate. A place like that tries to limit the male attendees to those who pay.

“It is. And I’m on a payment plan, so I’m limited as to how many guests I can bring, at least, you know, straight men. But I’m stoked. It’s the best way on the planet to blow off steam. Healthier than this stuff.” He holds up his glass of bourbon.

“Is that where you went last night?”

“Believe it or not, they’re closed most Saturdays. But Friday night when your lame ass was working, that’s where I was.”

I run a hand over my face and then through my hair, thinking back over Friday night in the ER. The place had been a madhouse. And they’d had a newbie nurse in admissions.

“If you picked plastics, you’d never have to work weekends.”

“And like my brother likes to tell me from time to time, if I’d picked gynecology, I could look at tits and ass all day.”

“So, you’re finally in agreement you picked poorly?”

Despite my annoyance with Harrison, a grin breaks out, and I just shake my head. “I like my career just fine.” I down another swallow of beer and add as an aside, “And I sure as hell wouldn’t pick gynecology in this state.”

Harrison disregards my comment. He’s fully aware of what I’m referencing, and there’s no point in digging into it when we’re aiming to relax.

Sunny sings about how she’s been waiting for a friend, and I wish I hadn’t brought Harrison. If given a choice, I’d listen to her soulful tunes all night, uninterrupted.

“I have to tell ya man, you’re not looking at her the way a man looks at his sister.”

God, he has a one-track mind.

“I don’t get it. Why aren’t you going for her?”

I tear my gaze away from Sunny. Harrison looks genuinely puzzled. He’s not trying to be a jerk; it just comes naturally to the guy. “She’s my brother’s ex,” I answer. He knows this.

“Wife?”

“Girlfriend.”

“Which brother was that again?”

“Sam.”

“He’s been married as long as I can remember. Olivia, right?” Harrison scratches at his jaw, looking thoughtful, but his gaze stays fixed on Sunny.
