I leave the house, needing to get out of here before I take her again. The woman is muddling my thoughts. She’s like a fucking balm to my anger. Right now, I need to refocus that anger and find out who the fuck is after me.

Whoever it is, God fucking help them.

FIFTEEN

TEAGAN

“Do not leave this house,” Elio instructs me, his tone hard and his eyes filled with hatred.

Good. I’m glad that he continues to hate me. It means that I’m not the only one. We have been married for five days, and he’s only somewhat nice whenever he’s fucking me. Just like all the other men. He fucks me, but he doesn’t touch me. Not once has he held me, nor has he touched my body. He’s just as the other men were: keeps his hands to himself as he has his way with me. I don’t know why that hurts. I have no idea why I thought he’d be different, why I believed that he would be nice. I was a fool. Now I know better.

“And why is that?” I ask, and my words have a bite to them. I’m sick of being stuck inside. For the past five days, I’ve not been able to do anything other than sit in this gigantic house and twiddle my thumbs. He has men watching me, making sure that I don’t go against his wishes. They have been keeping me locked up here.

His gaze narrows as he steps toward me. I’ve learned over the years that when men want you to do as they please, they’ll try and intimidate you, get you to do whatever they ask by asserting their power. When I was younger, I’d flinch at the tone and at the movement, giving the men the knowledge that they had scared me. But not anymore. That shit stopped a long time ago. Now, I hold my head high and listen to the command. I’ll never let anyone see my fear. Not again.

“Why are you so fucking annoying?” he mutters. “Can you not do as I ask?”

I raise a brow. “I’m sorry, did you actually ask, or did you instruct me to do something? I want to see my friends, but I’m stuck in your cage until you say otherwise.”

He glares at me. “Pain in the fucking ass. You want to go to the apartment?” he questions, his jaw tight and his eyes filled with anger.

I nod. Right now, it’s best if I don’t say anything.

“Then my men will take you there,” he growls. “You do exactly as they say. If not, you’ll have to deal with the consequences when I get back.”

“Okay,” I reply softly, grateful that he’s finally letting me do what I want.

He moves in so that we’re face to face. His nose brushes against mine, and his eyes darken with anger. “Trust me,la mia bellissima moglie,” he growls, “you do not want to anger me any more than you already have.”

I don’t say anything. He’s so hell bent on revenge for something my father has done that he hasn’t even thought about me as a person. I’m not my father. I despise him so fucking much. Had he even asked me once about it and my past, then he’d have known how much anger I have for the man who gave me life.

He slams his lips against mine. It’s hard, chaste, and filled with such rage. “Behave,” he growls as he pulls away from me. “I’ll find out if you don’t.”

I watch as leaves, my heart thumping crazily. How the hell am I going to survive a marriage to him if he’s always so angry toward me?

Every night he takes me, barely speaking any words to me—which I prefer. He fucks me and then rolls over and falls into a deep sleep. In the morning, he’ll growl at me to stay here and then he leaves. I won’t see him again until he’s waking me up and taking me.

There’s a knock at the door a while later. I’m fully dressed and ready for the day. I’m excited to see Portia and Nell again. It’s been five days since I’ve seen them. I left the wedding reception without saying goodbye. I want to speak to them, make sure that they’re okay.

“Mrs. Gallo,” Lorenzo greets me. “I’m your guard. Are you ready to go?”

I nod. “Yes, please.” Out of all the men that Elio has working for him, Lorenzo is by far the easiest to get along with. Not that I get along with any of them. I don’t feel comfortable with any man, Elio included.

I follow him out of the house. Even though Elio has gone, there are still men surrounding the perimeter of the house. They work in shifts, switching on and off throughout the day, ensuring that the house is safe and everyone inside is too.

“Have you had breakfast?” he questions.

“Yes, thank you.”

We remain silent throughout the drive to the apartment complex. I’m anxious, hoping that both my friends are okay. It’s been five days too long since I’ve seen them.

“I’ll be waiting here for you. If you need me, just yell,” he says once we enter the apartment complex.

I hit the button for the elevator and nod. “I will. Thank you.”

I know that Elio’s men are busy and that having them babysit me isn’t what they want to do. But I’m glad he’s brought me here. That I’m able to see Portia and Nell in the flesh and know that they’re okay.

I slide the keycard into the elevator. The doors close, the cart starts to travel upward, and I instantly feel at ease. God, I love this place. It was the first home I had. An actual place where I felt safe and knew that I wouldn’t be hurt.
