She almost fell off her chair.

She was staring at the handsome man from the bar. The one she had slept with. The one she had never expected to see again.

What washedoing here?

A million thoughts raced through her mind. He had known who she was. What if he was some kind of stalker? She should have thought twice before sleeping with some random guy—Mike was absolutely going to kill her when he found out about this!

He had seen her. He was walking over to her table. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down.

Amy blinked at him. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m waiting for someone.”

“I know,” he said.

“I don’t know how you found me, but I don’t have time to talk right now.” She had to get rid of him. She couldn’t let her patient see her talking to a one-night stand she’d had. “Look, if you want to give me your number I can call you—”

She didn’t want to call him. She wanted him to walk away and never have anything to do with her again. She was officially thoroughly creeped out by the whole business. What did he mean by tracking her down in a coffee shop and sitting down like he had some kind of right to be here? Like she was expecting him?

“Amy,” he cut her off. “We need to talk.”

“Why do we need to talk?”

Whatwasthis? Was he going to accuse her of stealing something from the penthouse or something? He definitely had a serious expression on his face—not at all like the way he had looked when his hands had been wandering all over her body last night—and she didn’t know what to make of it.

He sighed. “I have a confession to make.”

So he wasn’t here to accuse her of something. He was confessing toher. But for what? What had he done?

Maybe he had gotten it into his head, somehow, that she hadn’t enjoyed the sex. Maybe he was here to apologize for that.

But why would that be aconfession?

“Go on,” she prompted. “But you’ll have to be quick. I really am meeting someone.”

“I know that,” he said. “That’s why I’m here.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re meeting me,” he told her. “I’m Adriano Canali.”

Amy felt punch-drunk. For a moment, she didn’t even believe him. This was the guy who had known, just from hearing her first name, who she was. He clearly knew more about her life than he should. He could have figured out the name of the person she was meeting today. He could be trying to trick her…

He was watching her sympathetically, clearly waiting for her to adjust to the new information. But after a moment, he must have felt the need to speak, because he went on.

“I’m the one who’s been emailing you.” He pulled out a medical folder, and Amy saw that his name was written across the top. “I have everything you asked me to bring. All my test results. Everything. I’m really eager to start working with you. You know how badly I need this, Dr. Daniels. You probably know better than anyone in the world.”

She nodded slowly, still not touching the folder. She couldn’t bring herself to do it. “I don’t understand,” she said. “How could this have happened? I mean, last night…”

Her breath caught as she remembered.

“You knew who I was,” she said softly. “You knew it was me.”

He nodded. “That’s what I needed to confess to you. I’m so sorry.”

“Is that why you invited me up to your room?”

“No! Of course not. I wouldn’t do that. I invited you up because I wanted you to come up. I didn’t know it was you until after that.”

“Then why didn’t you say something? Tell me who you were?”
