“I’ve never steered you wrong yet, have I?”

“No,” Adriano agreed. “I don’t think you have.”

“Then will you please go and get in the car and let Luca take you to meet her? You’ve kept the poor woman waiting long enough.”

With a pang of guilt, Adriano looked at his watch. “I’m really late.” He had been so caught up in his own crisis that he hadn’t even noticed.

“You’re about six months late,” Tony agreed. “But Amy’s a really good woman. I think she just might forgive you, if you really grovel.”

“Tell me I haven’t messed this up too badly, Tony.”

“I don’t think you have,” Tony said. “I hope you haven’t. Because, speaking candidly, boss—”

“This hasn’t been candid so far?”

“She’s too good for you. You’ll never find such a good woman again.”

“I know,” Adriano agreed. “I’ve known that for a long time.”

It was part of the reason he had been feeling so afraid to confront all of this. It had been so much easier to hide out in his room, to pretend that he had no chance, that he already knew what she would say if he tried to talk to her. The fact that he might actually be able to reach out to her was terrifying. What if he tried and she turned him away?

Adriano had never before fully realized that his heart could be broken. But if anyone in the world was capable of that feat, it was Amy Daniels.

“Luca’s waiting outside,” Tony said. “Go, before she gives up on you entirely.”

It was enough to get Adriano moving. He grabbed his jacket and headed out the door to the waiting car.

As they drove along the road that led to the secluded spot by the lake—the spot that had always felt like his own private oasis—it occurred to Adriano that he had invited Amy into his life the moment he had taken her to the little getaway. That place had always been his. The fact that she knew to bring him there spoke volumes.

I can’t let this woman go. Tony’s right. No matter how hard I have to fight, I have to keep her—and our babies—in my life.

He hoped he wasn’t too late.

CHAPTER23

ADRIANO

When the car pulled up at the lake, Adriano had a moment of sheer panic—he didn’t see Amy anywhere. For a split second, he thought he was too late after all, that she had hailed a cab to take her away and that he would never track her down.

Already he was coming up with plans for how he would try to find her and bring her back, but he knew, too, that he couldn’t pursue her as ardently as he would have liked to. If she had run from him, he would have to be incredibly careful about bringing her back…

And then he saw her.

She had crawled away from the rock by the lake and was lying under a tree, propped up on her elbows, her face sheened in sweat. She hadn’t noticed him yet, and as he watched, she let out a cry of intense pain.

He ran to her side and dropped to his knees. “Amy! What is it? What’s wrong?”

“Adriano—” She burst into tears. She seemed overwhelmed at the sight of him.

“Are you hurt?” He felt frantic. Why hadn’t he gotten here sooner? “What’s going on?”

“The babies are coming,” she gasped.

Adriano was jolted. “Now?”

“Right now.”

“We need to get you to the hospital.”
