“You’ll come get us if she wakes up while we’re gone?”

He nods, taking the chair at the end of the bed and turning it so he can watch her. “Is there anything I need to know?”

“She needs sleep. And when she wakes up, she’ll need food and water. She needs to consume a lot of calories to replace what she burned.”

“Alright.” He still looks worried, but at least it tells me he gives a fuck.

I press a kiss to Salem’s forehead before crawling off the bed and slipping my boots back on. I slap Orion on the shoulder as I walk past him and wait for Oz.

“How do you think this is going to go?” Oz asks quietly as we walk down to the basement.

I shrug. “These are our men. They are loyal to us, but Salem being here will put them all at risk. This is supposed to be a safe space for us all. We’re asking them to give that up, so I don’t know,” I tell him truthfully.

We walk into the basement and find everyone seated. Even Evander is here. He catches my eye and nods at the tablet in his hand. “I’m monitoring the feeds from here. Jagger said this meeting took priority.”

“How’s Salem doing?” Crew asks, walking over to the small fridge and opening it. He pulls out two beers and tosses them to Oz and me.

I pop off the cap and take a swig before answering. “She’s sleeping. She’ll be fine, though.” I look at Luna, who is sitting on the floor building a tower out of blocks with Ruby. “What about you? Everything okay?”

“Yeah. I didn’t even know anything was wrong, Zig. I would have gone for my scan next week, not knowing my whole world was about to fall apart. Now, thanks to Salem, we’ll be spared the heartache. How do I thank her for something like that?”

“She won’t want your thanks, Luna. It’s what she does.”

She looks unsure but nods as she rubs her belly. I take another drink of my beer.

“I don’t know how she does it, man. Fuck, I don’t know how you two do it. Watching her go down like that and knowing why…” Jagger shakes his head.

“It’s something Zig and I have had to come to terms with. It’s hard watching her, but it’s who she is.”

“I can only imagine how much worse that can get. And as shitty as it is, at least you know she will get better. It’s a small comfort, but it’s more than she’ll have every time you two run off and put yourselves in danger, assuming you still want to be a part of Apex.”

I take the empty seat next to Wilder as Oz moves to sit on the floor near Ruby and Luna.

Halo walks in with a bright pink juice bottle and walks toward Ruby. “I’ll take her to play outside for a little while. Give you guys a chance to talk.”

Luna opens her mouth, but Halo gives her a look and shakes his head at her. “This is Apex business, Luna.” He kisses her hard and fast before picking up Ruby and tossing her over his shoulder. She laughs and squeals as he carries her out.

She takes a deep breath. “Fuck. Okay. Look, before we move to the subject of Salem, I want to talk to you all.”

We all focus on her, though I have an idea of where this is going.

“I love you guys. You know I do, but—”

“You have a family to raise and an MC to rule.” Greg finishes for her.

She smiles, looking relieved that none of us seem pissed. “Yeah, that.”

“Honestly, Luna, we thought you’d have passed the baton over long before now,” Slade tells her.

“I was thinking about it, but then Oz and Zig disappeared, and I just couldn’t.”

I get it. If she had walked away, she would have only been given scraps of info. As it turned out, there wasn’t much, regardless, but she didn’t know that then.

“I’d still like to be a consultant you can call on if you need one. But otherwise, if you guys don’t mind, I’d like to step down.”

“You’ll always be ours, Luna. But you have another family that needs you now. We want that for you,” Greg tells her.

“So, who wants to slip into my Manolo Blahniks?”
