We’ve made the trek there and back three days in a row now but it never gets old. Especially when we’re greeted by Itzia’s smiling face each time.

“I don’t know, but we’ll keep trying,” Oz answers, looking over his shoulder at me.

“I like the villagers. They don’t seem intimidated by the big, scary jungle at all.”

Zig laughs. “They don’t know anything different. This is their home. Could you imagine them in a city like New York?”

I shake my head. “No way. I can’t even picture myself there. Not now, anyway.”

Zig nods."I get that. It's easy to forget what living in the real world is like. Especially being out here with you.We made some amazing memories. We got the chance to just be together without prying eyes or having to look over our shoulders all the time. I like what we have here."

“I do too,” I whisper, my heart melting at his words. “Did you notice how they all seemed pretty cool about the three of us being in a relationship? I mean, we didn’t try to hide it, but I didn’t feel any kind of judgment from them.”

“They’re cool,” Oz agrees.

“The language barrier is a pain in the ass, though. With Zig being busy with the radio, we’ve had to rely on your rather impressive drawing skills to give everyone a rough idea of what we were talking about,” I tease.

“You don’t get to mock my drawing skills, woman.”

I chuckle under my breath as we continue walking. Suddenly, I feel Zig’s hands on my hips, and I realize I was about to fall over a downed tree that I didn’t see in the dark.

“Careful, little one,” he whispers in my ear, goosebumps breaking out across my skin, before helping me over the tree.

“Thanks.”

“I still can’t believe they managed to find our radio,” Oz shouts from in front of us.

Seems that when the plane tore in two, a lot of items were scattered farther than we realized, though the only things of ours we recognized were the radio, a ball cap, and a flip-flop.

“Yeah, well, it wouldn’t have been any good without the parts from the other one, so we were lucky.”

“No kidding. That thing looked like it was older than me.”

Zig chuckles. “It might have been. It took me a while to understand what Aapo was trying to tell me. Eventually, he drew me a picture. Alas, the old man’s skills are not as epic as Oz’s here.”

Oz lifts his hand above his head and flips him off.

“I think he was trying to tell me the radio came from another downed plane, but I’m not sure from when.”

“And somehow you managed to use it to get ours working.”

“Well, kind of. I wouldn’t say the ability to use Morse code means the radio is working, but it’s more than we had.”

“Do people even still use Morse code?”

“Sure. I’m just really hoping one of the guys catches it.”

“And if they do?”

Neither of them says anything for a minute. But I know. We keep walking in silence.

“Then they’ll come for us. Of course, there is always a risk. I sent the message using Morse code because a hacker, shouldn’t pick it up, and there are no cameras in command central to spot it. Only our team will know our coordinates.”

I bite my lip and keep my eyes on the ground.

“We talked about this, Salem.” I lift my head, not realizing Oz had turned around to talk to me.

“I know. And I know everything you said made sense, but I can’t control my fear any more than I can control my gift. Here I know who I am, out there—” I swallow and dip my head again, but they crowd me on either side.
