“Like what?” His suggestion does hold some merit. The fact that Alejandro didn’t rape her was a blessing, but it shocked the shit out of me. Alejandro is known to be a sadistic bastard, and rape is one of his favorite hobbies. He doesn’t do it for fun; he does it because he craves it. I doubt Salem’s white lie about losing her power would have been enough to hold him back, at least not on its own.

“Who else was killed the night we took her?”

“I don’t know. I’m not privy to that information.”

“What are you thinking?” Oz leans over and asks me.

“I’m not sure yet, but everything feels a little too neat, even down to the plane crash. The only thing that shouldn’t have happened was Salem going down with us.”

“If that’s true, then what happens next?”

Oz huffs before looking Dillon in the eye. “They take Salem, kill us all, and burn this place to the ground.”

“Oh, is that all?”

“No. Because once that’s done, the last loose end is Apex itself.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

Salem

When my guys don’t come, I look around hastily at the people trying to calm me down. When I realize it’s just Pika and Tor, I suck in a deep breath and pretend I’m okay. Inside, I’m freaking the fuck out. Oz and Zig didn’t come. Something must have happened to them, and now I’m completely on my own.

“I’m okay. I’m sorry. I just had a bad dream, that’s all,” I manage to get out as Mark, the guard, rushes in and looks at me warily. Moments later, the second guard, Denny, runs through the door with a doctor in tow.

Denny and the doctor freeze when they see me.

“She’s okay. Just a nightmare,” Mark tells them as he moves closer to me.

The doctor steps around him, giving him an annoyed look. He moves beside me and places the tips of his stethoscope in his ears before lifting the chest piece and waiting for me to give him the okay to come closer. Not wanting to risk them giving me something to calm me down, I don’t put up a fight. I lie back and nod to the man, keeping my eyes on Denny and Mark, who watch him like hawks.

The doctor listens to my chest before moving the thing closer to my heart. When he’s done, he looks at me. “Your heart rate is a little fast, but it’s starting to slow down.” His thick accent makes him a little difficult to understand.

“Sorry,” I apologize, sitting up and bringing my knees to my chest, trying to make myself small.

“It’s okay. I think you scared everyone more than anything. It happens. I’ll be back later to talk to you. I need to go through your file first. If everything is okay, I’ll go back to my rounds.”

I nod, not knowing what else to say.

When he turns to leave, Denny follows him, but Mark remains at the end of the bed, watching me with a bit too much interest. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

Denny looks over his shoulder and calls his name. “Let’s go. The boss will be back soon.”

“Have you guys seen Zig and Oz? I thought they’d be back by now,” I ask them softly.

“Debriefs can take a while. They’ll be back when they’re done.” Denny shrugs before turning and walking out the door.

“We’ll be outside. Shout if you need anything,” Mark tells me. The way he says it makes my skin crawl. I can guaran-fucking-tee I will never call him.

When I don’t give him any reaction, he reluctantly turns to leave and joins his partner. I watch him go and wait for a few minutes before sliding my hand under the pillow and pulling out the cell phone. The battery is at sixty percent. I hope it lasts. With nothing left to lose, I hit the SOS function again, now positive that something fucked-up is happening here.

When the cell phone suddenly begins vibrating in my hand, I panic and fumble with it before I manage to mute it. I shove the cell phone back under the pillow, my eyes on the door, as I pray to God that nobody heard it.

When no one enters, I sigh with relief. As much as I would have liked to have answered, I have no clue who was calling, and I can’t risk one of the guards hearing me and taking the phone away. Right now, I’m just hoping Oz and Zig find a way to get to me.

Climbing from the bed as quietly as possible, I make my way over to the doors and peer through the window. Both guards must be on either side, protecting the entrance, because I can’t see them. With how fast they reached me when I was screaming, I know they’re somewhere close, so walking out is not an option. I turn back to the room and walk over to the large window. It’s only one story, so I should be okay climbing out as long as the window isn’t alarmed.

My real problem is that I have no clue where Oz and Zig are.
