I continue my lap of the area, finding two more men, but both are already dead on the ground. Looks like my brother beat me to it.

I take the chance when I’m close enough to board the small plane. As far as private planes go, it’s not as swanky as some. But I’m not sure what Zig and I would do with champagne flutes and crystal glasses, anyway. It has a large bedroom, a shower, and a seating area, which has a mini fridge. That’s enough for me.

When I make it inside, I see Zig coming out of the bedroom.

“Anything?”

He shakes his head. “It was still locked up when I got here. Nothing’s been touched that I can see.”

“I don’t like this. Let’s just get Salem and get the fuck out of here.”

“Know what I don’t like? Being fucking lied to. You were right when you said this was way too easy. Even this ambush they set was bullshit.”

We head down the steps and back toward the spot where we left Salem.

“It might have been a shitty ambush, but it’s an ambush that should never have fucking been there unless our intel was leaked.”

“That’s the thing, Oz. I don’t think the feds leaked the info to the cartel. Did you actually look at any of the men you dispatched?”

I shake my head. Once you’ve seen one asshole, you’ve seen them all. He nudges me, and when I look down, I realize he’s passing me something. I take it, at first thinking it’s a wallet. It’s worse than that. When I flip it open, I find a badge and an ID identifying one of the dead as an FBI agent.

“What the fuck is a Fed doing here? They have no jurisdiction.”

“And why call us in if Uncle Sam was going to send in their own team anyway?”

“Maybe because, like always, we’re expendable to them,” I growl as I reach the shrubs.

“Salem?”

“Oh, thank God. Can I get up now? I’m pretty sure I have bugs crawling all over me.”

“You just survived a cartel prison and you’re worried about bugs?” Zig asks as he holds out his hand.

“Logic has no place in this conversation,” she says as she shudders.

I can’t help it. I laugh at her.

“Don’t worry, darling. We’ll protect you against creepy crawlies too.”

CHAPTERFOUR

Salem

Still not sure what the heck I’m supposed to be feeling, I put up little resistance when they usher me up the steps to the plane. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? You know, if you ignore the fact that I’m outmanned, outgunned, and just out of my goddamn mind?

Okay, Salem, keep it together.

I take a deep, calming breath and feel it do absolutely nothing. I’m pretty sure the only thing that will calm me down now is a bottle of tequila.

“Do you want to take a shower?”

I freeze, forcing them to do the same. Up until this point, I’d mostly had my mind on other stuff, so I forgot that there are some things that a woman can face that are almost worse than death.

“What is it? What’s wrong?”

“I think you scared the shit out of her, you dumb fuck.”

I realize the slightly taller one of the two has a touch deeper voice than his brother. He seems to be the quieter, more serious one of them both. Zig, he said his name was. I can’t say I’ve ever met a Zig before.
