ChapterOne

NICOLO

I shouldn’t fucking be here.

Not deep in Lowlander territory. Wouldn’t be, either, except for my damn boss’s sister, Mia, asked me to check on her new broken bird.

She didn’t use those words, but I swear Mia’s got an eye for those in trouble, can sniff it out, and me? I’ve got a soft spot for her. Always have. But it’s nothing that would get me killed. I see her as family.

Also, she’s the type to cut a man’s balls off if she thinks she needs to, and if she doesn’t, her husband, Christian, would.

Since I’ve got a few days off and nothing much to do and the De Luca crime family has what’s called peace in Dallas’s underworld, there’s time on my fucking hands.

Still, Brother’s Shack Bar and Grill ain’t exactly my idea of a good time.

Or a good place for a De Luca Enforcer to be spotted.

We don’t have issues with them, but there are acts of war and threatening moves and being spotted here isn’t gonna look good. My boss would not be happy if I start something like that.

Inadvertently, of course.

It’s early enough the place isn’t crowded, and late enough eyebrows won’t be raised by me coming in. Not that I give an actual shit about the last one. Just needless attention is not a thing I want.

“Says the fucking six-five man,” I mutter, giving the place a sweep like I’m looking for where I want to sit.

There are three guys packing. One woman. A couple of dudes in suits with loosened ties, and across the polished floorboards, behind the bar, standing on a stepladder putting away some actual top-shelf bottles, is probably the finest fucking ass this side of Texas.

Any side, really.

Not too big, just enough to fill a man’s palms, and a shapely, narrow waist with long legs encased in tight black denim.

Down her slender back ripples golden hair, reaching below her shoulder blades.

She has a body to die for, and that’s just from the backside view. I wonder about the front. Will it be just as desirable?

I cross to the bar. I’m in jeans and a white T-shirt, no gun, though there’s a switchblade tucked into my left boot. Hey, take the man from the fucking job but there’s no way on this planet you’re taking the job from the man.

She wobbles as she goes up on her toes in her boots and the bottle slides free as she grabs at the shelf.

I lunge over the bar and catch the bottle. “Careful.”

“Oh.”

And that’s when she wobbles badly and turns and knocks the breath from my lungs.

It’s a déjà vu moment, and I clutch the bottle.

Holy fuck.

She might be the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

Big blue eyes that have specks of brown. A sweet, soft mouth made for sin, kissing, and a man’s cock. The slightly pointed chin gives a heart shape to her mix of dirty sex and sweet innocence. That and the hesitancy and fire in her eyes.

She steps off the stool and takes the tequila from me. “You caught that from there?”

“I’ve a long reach. And . . . I’m sprawled on your bar,Tesoro.”

A blush lights up her cheeks in pink and she half smiles as I push up to my full height. Her eyes follow me up and then slide all the way down, making her blush a little pinker. “I have no idea what you said, but I’ll take that as a compliment.”
