I don’t trust him entirely because I don’t know him, but whatever he’s up to, I don’t see an immediate connection.

“Dan, I think I’ll keep an eye on her.”

“Where she lives?”

He’s skirting the Lowlander name because she doesn’t know it. “More or less, yes. I work for De Luca security, but . . .” I slide my hand down to rest under Avah’s upper arm, keeping her tight next to me even as she tries to pull free. “What are lines when personal lives are intertwined, right?”

The guy’s eyes narrow, but he nods slightly. “It’s on your head if something happens to her. Expect a call, Abruzzi.”

“Sure thing, man.”

Then he turns to Avah. “And you, don’t come down here and stick with your boyfriend, you hear?”

“I can do what I want,” she says in a dangerous tone.

“It’s not safe down here.”

“He’s right,” I say softly. “It’s not.”

“Take her home.”

And with that, he looks hard at Avah.

“Your dad’s gonna call. I’d answer.”

Then he’s gone.

She looks up at me, half mad, half melting as it does things to my libido that look, it really does. The wild cat, the innocence, the rest of her I’m itching to uncover in all the ways there are.

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” she says.

Something snaps inside me. I pull her real close and bend into her. “Yeah, you are. I’ve had one hell of a fucking day, and we’re getting out of here. You and me. The two of us.” Then I look past her, and Dan’s still there, at the edge of a building, his shadow is long on the ground. Idiot.

I drag her with me until we reach my car, then open the door and make her get in. “You be here when I get back. I’m talking to your friend back there.”

Her eyes spit fire. “And if I’m not?”

“I know where you work and live,Tesoro. I’ll find you, and when I do, you’re not going to like it. Or maybe you will, who the fuck knows? But really, I wouldn’t test me on that. I’ve had one hell of a fucking day.”

With that I slam the door shut and lock the car.

This isn’t going to take long.

“Yeah, yeah, I know, I fucking know, but it’s Avah, and she’s gotten herself a De Luca. Enforcer, I think. Big guy.”

I pluck the phone from his hand. “Mr. Morgan,” I say pleasantly. I’m crossing all the lines right now, and I don’t care. “Your daughter’s safe. She’s in my protection.”

“Protection?”

“Yes.” All the fucking lines. And maybe I’m setting them on fire too. I almost ask him to call Leo, but I stop myself. This isn’t De Luca business. “And this is personal, not business. I like Avah.”

“Fuck.”

“I’m sorry, sir, but she’s sitting in my car. Well, I’m sure Dan told you where, but I don’t want to leave her there longer than I need to. You can call me later if you like. Avah will give you my number.”

I hang up and hand the phone back.
