“You’re gay?”

I glanced up at him. “Last night I stuck my fingers up your ass without a second thought, and now you’re surprised?”

His face had turned red, and his lips shrank into a firm line. My throat started to tighten. “Is that a problem?”

“No,” he answered almost before I finished my sentence. “It’s not a problem, I just never realized.”

“Yeah, well, it doesn’t really impact my driving ability, so it hasn’t come up.”

An uncomfortable silence fell between us, but I was confused by his reaction. He was hard to pin down. I didn’t want to talk about what had happened between us, but it needed to be done.

I sighed, “Hey, so, about last night -”

“You have a bunch of missed calls,” he interrupted, tossing the covers back. “You should see what they need.”

“Where are you going?”

“Gonna take a shower.”

“You took one last night.”

“I want to take another one.”

He disappeared into his bathroom before I had a chance to react. I fished my phone out of the covers and pulled up my missed calls.

There were ten, all from my landlord.

I hit her number and she picked up on the second ring. “Ben, I’m so glad you called me back.”

“What’s up, Sasha? Do you need something?”

“No, that’s not it.” Her voice was different than normal. “There’s no nice way to say this, but your apartment flooded.”

Chapter Six

Oliver started in on me as soon as the door shut.

“You’re late.”

“I know.”

“Again.”

“I know.”

I had run out of his apartment Saturday morning to go scope out the damage. One of the main waterlines had gotten clogged by God knows what, and it had decided to burst on the floor above me. Those apartments had taken the brunt of it, but I ended up with a good 2 and a half inches of water throughout most of my kitchen and living room. None of my furniture was too damaged, and maintenance had helped me put all the light stuff up and put buckets under the legs of the heavier items, but I had to vacate while they dealt with everything.

Since then, I had been staying with Marina. I’d grabbed as much as I could and headed over to her spare bedroom.

Her apartment was farther from Oliver’s than mine was, and I had estimated wrong. Monday I had been a good ten minutes late, but it was closer to five this time.

Regardless, Oliver was not amused.

We hadn’t spoken about Friday night, and I was beginning to wonder if we ever would. The day before he had treated me the same as always, with a little added irritation from my late arrival. I found myself stealing glances at him in the rearview mirror, but he was always focused on his phone or reading files for work.

Maybe that was for the best. I hadn’t been able to shake the memory of that night from my mind, but that didn’t mean Oliver felt the same. Hell, I had liked the guy for years now, of course, it stuck with me. He had just been curious, and I should take his silence for what it was: a rejection.

I forced myself to focus as I weaved through traffic. “Will you need me today?”
