“Oh, for God’s sake, William, just tell him,” my father interjected.

“Alright, alright.” William leaned forward, steepling his fingers. “My doctor found a tumor.”

“Dad…”

“But it’s benign. They already took a biopsy and ran all the tests, and there’s no cause for concern.” He let out a heavy sigh, and the CEO mask slipped, leaving a man who had become tired. “When they first found it, all I could think about was your mother, and how I wished she was still beside me.”

He offered Oliver a sheepish grin. “I may have spiraled a bit, before I got the results, and started thinking about the two of you. This company represents the work that Violet and I did together, but you two are our legacy. Her legacy. I have loved your mother every day since I met her, and that hasn’t stopped with her death. I just wanted our children to experience that kind of love.”

The weight of his words settled upon us, pressing against our skin. “I don’t know if anyone can match the love you and Mom had - have - but I’m going to give it a chance.” Oliver smiled at me. “Assuming you want to.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’ll have a hard time getting rid of me.”

“Alright lovebirds, that’s enough.” William waved us away. “You have my blessing, for what it’s worth. Violet always seemed to like Ben, anyway. Now go on, just because I want my son settled in a loving relationship doesn’t mean I want to see you two making goo-goo eyes at each other.”

I stood up from my seat, taking our cue to leave. My father nodded as we walked by, and I had the strangest feeling he had known about Oliver and I long before now, but it didn’t matter.

We paused outside the door, taking a moment to gather ourselves as Chantel pretended to ignore us.

Oliver took my hand and squeezed. “Can we talk?”

Chapter Sixteen

My apartment was the same as I had left it, but it felt different with Oliver beside me. He strode inside and plopped himself onto the couch, then patted the seat beside him. I was happy to comply, and dropped down beside him, pulling him against my chest.

“So, what do we do now?” he asked.

I let my lips brush against the top of his head. “What do you want to do?”

He turned his face against me, nuzzling my neck. “You’re really going to make me say it?”

My hands snaked around his torso, smoothing over his stomach. “I am,” I breathed. He fit so well against me, and it felt so good to have him in my arms. So right. I was never going to let him go.

“I want to be with you. I want to date you.”

I smiled. “Are you asking me to be your boyfriend?”

He pulled away, pouting. “Don’t tease me.”

But I couldn’t help it. “I just want to hear you say it,” I murmured, leaning in to nip at his lower lip. “Won’t you?”

“I want you to be my…” he hesitated, struggling with the word. He brought his hands up to cover his face, “My boyfriend.”

“Again,” I breathed, kissing along the sharp line of his jaw.

“Be my boyfriend,” he whispered.

“Only if you’ll be mine.”

“Obviously.”

My hands worked on their own, sliding beneath his shirt. There was no resistance, only eagerness. “I love you, Oliver.”

He took hold of my head, pulling me down to his lips. “I love you, too.”

It had been less than a week since the last time we had had sex, but his touch ignited a fire within me. I was ravenous for him, starved from my days in solitude.

He drifted down to lie across the couch, pulling me on top of him. His knee crept between my legs, rubbing against my growing erection. I growled, burying my head against his chest.
