Page 68 of Hate You Always

I’m not sure it’s possible.

Ryder McAdams has always had this kind of effect on me. All he has to do is lay hands on my body and my world gets turned upside down and inside out. It’s as exhilarating as it is frightening.

I rip my gaze away in an attempt to regain my equilibrium. As I do, my attention falls on the athletic center.

My brows pinch together as I stare at the sprawling building. “What are we doing here?”

The smoldering look dissolves as secrets dance in his eyes. It’s enough to steal my breath away, just as much as the hot look that had flashed across his face earlier.

“Haven’t figured it out yet?”

I draw the corner of my lip into my mouth and chew it as I contemplate the situation. Without further explanation, Ryder exits the vehicle and walks around the hood before popping open the passenger side door.

“Come on, Miss smarty pants.” He extends a hand for me to take. “Tell me what your theory is.”

“I’m not sure,” I mutter. For the first time in my life, my brain is failing me. It’s not working properly. Although, I think that has more to do with the guy at my side than anything else. His nearness makes it impossible to think straight.

Ryder flashes a grin. “Good. I like keeping you on your toes.”

Even though nerves gleefully eat away at my insides, I place my fingers in his and allow him to help me from the vehicle. The moment our hands touch, energy sizzles through the tips. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to the sensation.

He clicks the locks on his truck as we head to the main entrance of the sprawling building. That’s when I notice his vehicle is the only one parked in the lot.

“What are we doing here if the place is closed?”

Once we make it to the sidewalk, we swing to the right, walking around the massive brick structure to a plain metal door that’s been propped open.

My brows skyrocket as Ryder meets my inquisitive stare. “A friend works here as a custodian. I told him that we wanted to borrow the facilities for a couple of hours.”

“Why?” I ask, pitching my voice low as we slip through the door.

It takes a minute or two for my eyes to adjust to the murky darkness. Ryder turns on his phone flashlight before his other hand slips around mine to tow me down the long stretch of deserted corridor.

I’ve been inside the building a few times to work out with Carina, but it’s weird to be here when the place is completely empty. The way our shoes echo off the concrete walls is creepy.

I tug on his hand. “Are you sure we should be here? What if someone catches us?”

He glances at me. “Then we run really fast.”

Oh god.

I’ve never been in trouble. Not even so much as a tardy for being late to class in high school. I’d hate for that to change during my senior year of college. All I see are my hopes for a prestigious med school going up in a puff of smoke because of one bad decision.

“Ryder,” I whisper hesitantly. “Maybe we—”

He stops and jerks my hand until I’m stumbling forward and crashing into his broad chest. Even in the darkness that surrounds us, his gaze pins mine in place.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, all right?”

My lungs empty of air.

His hands settle on the tops of my shoulders as he presses me closer. “Do you trust me?”

I don’t know…

Do I?

Do I trust Ryder McAdams?
