“I think I will lie down for a while. I really have a headache now,” she said, leaving my room.

Ha. Thought so.

With her gone, there was just one thing left to do. Except update Damien.

SHE IS COMING WITH US TOMORROW. LEAVING AT 10:00 AM.

He was in agreement. I’LL BE THERE, he responded. He probably had anticipated us leaving even earlier, or tonight. I had pretended that I was looking forward to the road trip, but the truth was, hours in a vehicle with my mom and Damien really didn’t appeal to me. It was either going to be very quiet or awkward conversations. Neither was avoidable.

There was one last thing I needed to update him on. He wasn’t going to like it.

AND ONE MORE THING MR. BLAZE, I TOLD HER WE ARE DATING. NOTHING SERIOUS.

He didn’t text back immediately as I expected. When he did, I couldn’t help but chuckle at his response. Somehow, I knew he was going to be okay with it.

THEN YOU BETTER START CALLING ME DAMIEN AND NOT MR. BLAZE.

At least you didn’t suggest babe or sweetheart.

Maybe this wasn’t going to be as weird as I thought it would be. He was a professional.

SEE YOU TOMORROW....DAMIEN. I had to admit, it felt nice calling him by his name. More casual and I liked that. Not that we were friends, but there was nothing wrong with being friendly.

HAVE A GOOD NIGHT, HONEY...

I rolled my eyes and then tossed my phone onto my bed. This was the first time Damien had cracked a joke. Was he really this playful, or was he just practicing for the role he needed to play for the next several days?

I knew the pet name honey was just the start. If we were dating, there would be hand holding, and maybe even a kiss or two.

I started this and needed to follow through. At least until Damien was able to locate my family. A flash of my conversation with my mother flooded my mind again.I love you.How could I almost forget to tell him? This was even more important than my mother agreeing to travel with us.

I couldn’t text him this information, mostly because I had no idea how to spell it. Getting up, I closed my bedroom door and then grabbed my phone off my bed, and dialed his cell phone.

“Hello, honey, how are you doing?” Damien said as he picked up my call.

Even though I knew this wasn’t real, it felt nice hearing the term of endearment. I’d dated, for real, and even been called babe. Yet hearing honey from Damien gave me a flutter. It wasn’t going to be easy, but I had to remind myself it was all an act. I was just a client.

Keeping my voice barely a whisper, I said, “Damien, I had to call before I forgot. My mother spoke to me in her native tongue.”

“She did? Why?” he asked.

“I’ll tell you about that later. Before I forget, I wanted to say what she said to me.” I did my best to repeat the words as my mother had said them. “It’s not exact, but that is the best I can do.”

“Can you say it again, slower? I’m going to record it,” he stated.

I did as he asked, thinking about each word and its pronunciation. No matter how I tried, it was close but nothing as smooth as when my mother spoke it. “Did you get it?”

“I did. Do you know what it means?” he asked.

“I love you,” I replied.

“I love you.” He said it in English and then again in my mother's language.

It sent chills throughout me when he said it in that foreign language. “Do you know what language it is?” I asked, trying not to focus on my physical response to hearing it.

“I don’t think I've ever heard it before. I’ll send it off to be analyzed and will let you know what I find. Thanks for calling me with this tonight. It’s what I was trying to obtain at lunch today.”

“I know. I can’t believe she used it with me. I tried to get more, but I thought if I pushed her any further, she would shut down again,” I explained.
