Thankfully, my fingers located it, and I opened the door. Unfortunately, the lights were on, and my mother was standing there with her arms crossed.

Great. I know that disapproving look.

“Mom, I thought you’d be asleep.”

“And I thought you and Mr. Blaze weren’t serious,” she said.

“Were you spying on us?” I asked, kind of shocked. I knew she didn’t approve of us dating, but this was extreme, even for her.

“I was worried when I heard voices outside the door, and no one came inside. When I looked through the peephole, well, you know what I saw,” she stated. “He’s not the one for you. I’m telling you, there is something about him that is not right.”

You mean an amazing man who's going to help me find my family. He definitely sounds like the right one.

There were complications that I had to deal with, like the fact I found him sexy and his kisses, absolutely delicious. Desiring him hadn’t been something I had considered when I started this process. But I had to play off the fact that my mother could sense my...attraction to Damien.

“Mother, I love you, but Damien makes me happy,” I said. That was true. Just not in the way she thought. He was the one person willing to help me.

She shook her head and said, “I am telling you, MaKayla. That man is going to break your heart.”

That was a possibility because that kiss wasn’t acting on my part, and the need between my legs was real. But I’ve started this, and I’m not giving up now.

“Mom, it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to take a hot shower and go to bed. We have another big day ahead of us tomorrow.”

“Yes, we do. We should be home and in our own beds by midnight tomorrow,”

I didn’t bother arguing. Supposedly Damien was working on a plan.Better be a good one, because not much is going to stop her from getting home tomorrow.

I grabbed a set of pajamas from my suitcase and went into the bathroom. I wasn’t sure why Damien kissed me tonight. Had he anticipated mom watching us? Was he performing for her? Or maybe it was a practice run for when he kissed me in front of her. So it won’t feel awkward.

But awkward wasn’t how I’d describe it. Hot. Passionate. Those fit so much better. Being with Damien didn’t scare me. It was how much I wanted it, that did.

I reached into the shower and turned down the heat. I may have said I needed a hot shower, but I really could use a cold one.

Also wish I had my own room tonight because I have a feeling Damien is going to visit me in my dreams.

Now that would be awkward.

CHAPTER10

Damien

I hoped MaKayla slept better than I did. Kissing her hadn’t been part of the plan, but then again, neither was pretending to be dating. I had exceptional hearing, and I knew her mother was watching us. Or at least listening.

After that encounter, I expected MaKayla to text me or something. Maybe tell me that I crossed the line. But not one word from her. Was she that angry? I could text or call her, but we had agreed to sleep in this morning. Delay our departure as long as possible. Reaching out now with her mother in the room would only give Venus a reason to urge us to leave now.

I had plenty to keep me busy anyway. Brian had called me earlier and given me some information about Tabiq that had me concerned even more than before. Several years back, the country had its government overthrown. The timing of that seemed to coincide with the Hendersons making their appearance in Tabiq. I didn’t believe in coincidences. They were somehow involved in what had conspired. And based on the fact they had built a five-star luxury beach resort, I could see why.

They weren’t any different than their father James. Just the people they were taking advantage of were different. Brian said he could not gather any further information as to what exactly the Hendersons’ involvement in Tabiq was. I understood, he had no authority in Tabiq. His hands were tied. There was only one reason why he’d share such confidential information. He knew I’d want to dig deeper. Not because of what the Hendersons were doing, but because it might affect MaKayla if she learns her heritage.

But MaKayla was twenty-five and knew nothing about Tabiq. Whatever the Hendersons are doing there now, had nothing to do with why her mother ran from there. I knew I wasn’t going to get the answer from Venus. It meant that I needed to visit Tabiq myself and do some digging. For all I knew, Venus had kept her daughter away from her father and he’d been looking for MaKayla all these years.

There was no reason for me to update MaKayla on what I was doing. She was a smart woman and would demand to accompany me on the trip. Even though she was a grown woman, capable of making her own decisions, it was my job to ensure she didn’t make any foolish ones. At least concerning this.

I found the Henderson resort. New Hope. What are they hoping for? To rule a country because they had everything else they wanted?Bastards.Like Brian, I had no authority in Tabiq. I was in the line of saving people, but usually an individual, not an entire country. Sadly, a country as poor as Tabiq, wasn’t in any position to stop the Hendersons.

There was no doubt that I’d cross paths with them while I was staying at the resort. If I happened to gain any information that could be beneficial to Brian to open an investigation, I’d be happy to get my hands on it and pass it on to him.

I booked myself a flight and then a room for a couple of days. Both were available as soon as the next day, but rushing off would raise suspicion with MaKayla. I had told her we were going to take a slow trip back to Halifax, and I wasn’t about to change that. With any luck, I might even learn something new from Venus, but I highly doubted it. That woman was tightlipped. I needed to know why.
