“Really? Where were you thinking about going?” asked.

“Fiji,” Venus replied.

“I’ve been. It’s very nice. I travel often and each time I like to go someplace different,” I said. “I’m actually heading on vacation after I return to the US.”

“Maybe we should skip the sightseeing so you can go home and prepare for your trip,” Venus suggested.

You’d like that, wouldn’t you?

“Nothing to do. Everything is already booked.”

“I forgot. Where are you going again,” MaKayla asked.

“Tabiq,” I replied. No reaction from MaKayla, but Venus looked like she was about to jump out of her skin. “Are you okay?” I asked.

“I...I’m tired. I’d like it if we could find a hotel so I can lie down,” she replied.

“Mom, you probably just need to eat something. Why don’t we find a restaurant and eat? I bet you will feel much better then,” MaKayla suggested.

Venus shook her head. “All this traveling and sightseeing isn’t agreeing with me. I can’t wait to be home.”

“It’s not too late. We can still get in a couple of days on a beach somewhere,” MaKayla said. “Bet the warm air and sun would make you feel much better.”

This hadn’t been my plan, and I already knew what Venus was going to say, but I had to ask. “Why don’t the two of you accompany me to Tabiq?”

“Absolutely not!” Venus said sternly.

Playing it off I said, “Don’t like Tabiq?”

She huffed. “This has nothing to do with Tabiq. It’s one thing to allow you to drive us home and to go sightseeing with you. But we are not traveling halfway around the world with you. Not me, and not my daughter. Is that clear, Mr. Blaze?”

“Mom, Damien was just being nice,” MaKayla said, going to her mother's side.

“Sounds pushy to me, but that’s just my opinion. Now, can we please find a hotel?”

MaKayla seemed mortified at her mother’s short fuse. I actually enjoyed it. It was clear that Venus didn’t want MaKayla to know anything about Tabiq, and she wanted this topic to be over. She turned away from the falls and headed for the car.

MaKayla looked surprised by it all. “I’m...I’m really sorry about that. My mom never speaks to anyone like that. I guess she really isn’t feeling well.”

She was sick of one thing. Fear of her secrets being revealed. For now, it was safe, but it wasn’t going to last forever.

“Then let’s get to the hotel. Maybe you should stay with her tonight just in case she really isn’t well,” I suggested.

“I think that’s a good idea. Thanks for being so understanding, Damien.”

I escorted her to the car, and we headed to the hotel. Venus closed her eyes, but I knew she wasn’t asleep. She was probably thinking of how the hell to get me out of her daughter's life.

Get used to it, because I’m not going anywhere until I know MaKayla has her answers, and nothing is going to happen to her.

Not exactly what she hired me for, but it’s what she needs.

CHAPTER11

MaKayla

“You look much better today,” I said to my mother, who was once again up at the crack of dawn. “Maybe if you slept in a little later, you wouldn’t be so tired when we are off enjoying ourselves.”Or trying to.

“I enjoy watching the sun rise. It’s not something I usually get to do when we are home.”
