“When was the last time you spoke to Michael?”

“It was the day we boarded the boat he sent for us. He had given the captain all the instructions as to where to bring us next. He also had given him a package to give to me. It held all the documents I needed for Canada and also enough money to raise our daughter without any worries. He had even purchased a home in my name. He had thought of everything.”

“Except for the fact that your daughter would one day want to know about him.” Venus nodded and I said, “He’s not dead, is he?”

“I... don’t know. I told her that so she wouldn’t look for him. So that she knew he wouldn’t ever show up at a birthday party or a holiday event. But I guess even dead, she missed him. I don’t understand that. She never knew him.”

“Maybe because he was such a mystery and she just wanted to know about him.”

“But she can’t know. Even though she hired you, you can’t let her know. I must keep her safe. I can’t risk what happened to me, to happen to her.”

Fuck no.I’d kill anyone who hurt her like that.

“Venus, I need to know about Michael. The more I know, the better I can protect her,” I stated.

“I have no idea where to find him. I just know his name was Michael and that he came to Tabiq almost twenty-six years ago. I never got in touch with him. He contacted me.”

“Via phone?”

“Twice by phone. When he learned about MaKayla and then when he gave me the instructions about the boat and Canada.”

“And the other times?” I asked.

“He wrote me letters. Most of them were the same. But one is something that changed my life. The one that he told me what he wanted for his daughter.”

“Can I see that letter?” I asked.

“I don’t know what happened to it. I might have left it behind in Tabiq with all my other belongings,” she said. “He told me to leave everything behind, and I did.”

“You trusted him that much?” I asked, puzzled.

She looked me in the eye and said, “You don’t know what it was like. What choice did I have but to trust him? If I stayed, MaKayla would someday face what I did.”

“I’m glad you got her out of there.”

“Me too. But I have a question for you. Are you going to tell her what I told you?” she asked.

“Not now. But she can’t know we spoke. And I’m going to need to stay close to her while I think about what to do next.”

“What does that mean?” she questioned.

“It means that I’m going to date your daughter. Be prepared to see a lot more of me,” I warned.Because until I know she is not in harm's way, I'm not going anywhere.

“I thought you said you weren’t really dating her. That she hired you to find Michael.”

“Yes, but she doesn’t know that you know that,” I smiled.

“You want me to lie to my daughter?” she said, as though it was the first time.

I peered at her. “I think you’ve had plenty of practice.”It’s my acting skills I'm worried about.

“You are not a nice man,” she stated firmly.

What she didn’t know was this was me being nice. I easily could’ve destroyed her relationship with her daughter. But all that would do was add more pain to the one they obviously were both going through.

“I don’t need to be nice. I just need to keep her safe.”

“If you would just leave it alone, then she wouldn’t be in danger. But I have a feeling that you going to Tabiq just stirred up things I wished remained buried.”
