But why was I enjoying myself so much when I knew it wasn’t real? I wasn’t acting when I blushed. Or when he called me mon amour and my heart fluttered. None of that was an act. And that scared me more than my mother learning the truth about who Damien really was.

I turned around quickly and knocked a tray out of Jenny’s hands. The food and dishes all went crashing onto the floor.

“Oh, no. Not again tonight,” Jenny said. “You’re becoming accident-prone.”

No. Just distracted from what is supposed to be important to me.

“I’ll clean it up. You go and tell the chef so he can prepare another order.”

“What about the customers?” she asked.

I looked over my shoulder and they were pointing at me and laughing. “I think they’ll be fine.”

This was a bigger mess than the one the other day because the tray was full of food. I cleaned it up and then had to do the walk of shame while carrying it back into the kitchen. Damien saw me and walked over and took the tray from me.

“They didn’t like the food?” he said, trying to lighten my mood. It wasn’t helping.

I took each plate and scraped it off over the trash barrel before putting it in the pile to be washed. He reached over and I felt his hand on my back.

“Damien, you can’t touch me like that at work,” I stated.

He pulled his hand away and held up a long spaghetti noodle dripping with sauce. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I figured you didn’t want to wear this all night.” Then he reached up and pulled out a piece of lettuce out of my hair. “Or this.”

This night was the worst. I could cry. Instead, I found myself laughing hysterically and couldn’t stop.

“What is going on here? Are you two having a food fight?” mom asked as she entered.

“Of course not,” I replied.

“Not yet,” Damien joked, still holding the spaghetti.

“You wouldn’t,” I warned.

“No, mon amour. I wouldn’t.” He leaned over and kissed me briefly. “But you need to go home.”

“I can’t leave now. It’s our peak time.”

“I wasn’t suggesting you leave for the night, just long enough to change,” I suggested.

“I still can’t go. Not right now,” I replied. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out my keys. “Can you go to my house and get me a change of clothes?”

“You got it,” he said, taking my keys. “Anything specific?”

I nodded. “You’ll find another uniform hanging in my bedroom closet. Thank you, Damien.”

He kissed me briefly again, and said, “Anything for you, mon amour.”

I was too stunned to reply and just watched him leave. Mom, unfortunately, wasn’t speechless and said, “Let’s talk in the office.”

Not again.

“Mom, I have customers to attend to. We can talk after work, I promise,” I said, and left the kitchen before she tried again.

I had no idea what she wanted to tell me, but I didn’t want to hear it if it had anything to do with Damien. That man made me forget everything, and for a brief moment, it was as though there were just the two of us in the world. He made me laugh and heated up my insides like no one else.Whatever this is, ...I don’t want it to end. And mom’s expression said she was going to give me a reality check.

Not tonight, mom. Tonight, Damien is my boyfriend and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.

Damien returned with my change of clothes and the rest of the night went off without any problems. In a way, it went better than usual. Damien didn’t just wash dishes, he came out into the dining room and chatted with the customers. They all seemed to love him.
