“That’s a shame because I had one planned for tomorrow,” he said.

“What are you talking about?”

“You do have the day off tomorrow, don’t you?” he asked.

“Yes. Why?” I asked.

“Can’t tell you. It’s a surprise. Just be ready for me to pick you up at six,” he said.

“Damien, you don’t need to do any of that. Mom and everyone else already believe we’re in a serious relationship. I can just tell them we went out and they’d believe me.”

“This isn’t about your mom or anyone else. I’m taking you out tomorrow because I want to. Now the only question left unanswered is whether you want to go out with me as well,” he said.

The restaurant was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so I was free. But I wasn’t joking. I didn’t like surprises. They never worked out for me. Always left me disappointed. I looked into his eyes and knew he wasn’t going to take no for an answer, not that I could bring myself to even utter it.

“Damien, I’m not sure this is a good idea.”

“I know it’s not, but I don’t care. I want to take you out,” he said. “If I show up at six, will you go?”

This was foolish. No matter how good it was now, it wasn’t going to end well. He didn’t live in Canada, and I was not moving to the US. People might say, what harm can one date do, but one kiss... and many small pecks had shaken me to the core. I could only imagine what a date was going to do to me.

I opened my mouth, ready to tell him no, but my lips defied me. “Yes. I’ll go.”

He leaned over, kissed me, and said, “Good. Now let’s get home. It’s been a long day and you need to rest.”

We held hands as he walked me to my car. But I knew I wasn’t about to get any sleep tonight, because tomorrow couldn’t come fast enough.

But it probably will be over before I know it.

CHAPTER19

Damien

“What do you mean there is no one named Venus Prada missing from Tabiq?” I asked Brian.

“Not by any other last name either. However, there are plenty of women who disappeared over a span of several years.”

“How many women are you talking about?” I asked, thinking that Venus had been just one.

“Over thirty years, there were at least sixty women never seen again,” Brian stated

Fuck. “Sixty? You’re serious? Sixty women disappeared off an island that cannot be easily gotten into?” I asked, blown away by the number.

“Those numbers confirm our initial theory that Tabiq was involved in human trafficking.”

“Was or is?” I asked.

“There is no proof of any such activity for the past ten years,” Brian stated. “That’s all I got for now. I’ll let you know if I hear anything further.”

“Same here,” I said and ended the call.

That time period coincided with the time the Hendersons were there. Maybe Draven was right, and they weren’t part of the problem. Maybe they were there to fix it. But how the hell did they know it needed fixing?

The only assumption I could come up with was that they learned what happened to their mothers. I know if that had happened to my mother, I’d have done everything in my power to ensure it wasn’t going to happen to anyone else.

I might have misjudged them, but I still had questions and I needed my brother's help. Dialing his number, Draven answered. “How is it going with MaKayla?” he asked.

“As I expected. Nothing will change until we have the information she wants. But that’s not why I called. I need a favor,” I said.
